SAN DIEGO -- It was a rally that truly came out of left field. Buffalo Bills Devin Singletary Jersey . James Ward won 10 of the last 11 games to take a stunning five-set victory against Sam Querrey and give Britain a 2-0 lead against the United States in the first round of the Davis Cup on a temporary red clay court in the outfield of Petco Park, the downtown home of baseballs San Diego Padres. Ward, ranked 175th in the world, was two games from losing the match when he began his rally that gave him a 1-6, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory. With dusk approaching and the lights on at the downtown baseball park, Ward won the match with an overhand smash. He leaned back, pumped his fists and hollered as his teammates, watching from one side of the court, jumped to their feet in celebration. "Its great to be around a group of guys you dont really have the support of normally, every week of the year," Ward said "Its certainly a different feeling. Youre not just playing for yourself, youre playing for everyone else." Wards victory in 3 hours, 11 minutes, followed Wimbledon champion Andy Murrays easy straight-set victory against Donald Young, who was making his Davis Cup debut. Murray has won 17 straight Davis Cup singles matches. Britain can clinch the match on Saturday if it wins doubles. Murray and Colin Fleming are scheduled to face Bob and Mike Bryan. Captains have until an hour before the match to make any changes. Murray, who had back surgery in September, said he feels good to go for doubles. Querrey, the United States No. 1 singles player in this tournament and ranked No. 49 in the world, had a 4-2 lead in the fourth set after winning the sixth game at love. But Ward rallied to win the next four games and the set to force a deciding fifth set. He jumped to a 4-0 lead in the fifth set before Querrey broke serve with a bleeder over the net to pull to 4-1. Ward then closed out the match. Ward didnt break Querreys serve until the eighth game of the fourth set to tie it at 4-4. "I thought Sam served really well from the beginning to the first three sets," Ward said. "It wasnt me returning badly. He made a lot of good serves. But in the end I got some chances and it happened." Ward improved to 9-5 in Davis Cup play. "Look, I love playing for my country," he said. "Every time I do it, it obviously brings something out in me thats a bit different, which I didnt see in the first set." He said team captain Leon Smith told him to come out of his shell. "And I did," Ward said. Ward said his parents travelled to San Diego for the match and are staying with long-time friends. "I came here when I was a kid," he said. "People always said, Where is your favourite place in the world youve been, and I have often said San Diego. Its a great place. I love being here. Again, to play a great match like today was pleasing." Querrey said he was "a little bummed obviously that I couldnt help the team. But its not over. You have to win three points. And if we can bounce back tomorrow and Bob and Mike win the doubles and then I think our side takes two on Sunday. "I thought he played well," Querrey said of Ward. "He came up with some good shots. A few break points that I had earlier, maybe if I had come through on those it could have been different. But he played well throughout the match. I started missing a few first serves when I needed them. But he did a good job of putting returns in later in the match and ended the match." U.S. captain Jim Courier said Ward played the way the Americans thought he would. "He was up, he was down, he was all over the place, but in the end he fought all the way through and the quality he showed shined through." Murray overwhelmed Young 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 in 1:38 in the opener of the World Group match. Murray was barely challenged by Young. The two-time Grand Slam winner took leads of 5-0 in the first set and 5-1 in the second set. Young never broke serve but took the sixth game of the third set to four deuces before the British star had an ace and then won when Young netted a backhand. "I played a good match today," Murray said. "I gave him very few opportunities when I was serving. I gave him a couple in the third set which was due to his good play and him playing better and me making some mistakes. But overall it was a good match for me." Murray, who had back surgery in September, said playing a relatively short match on Friday gives him a good chance of playing in the doubles match Saturday. "That obviously helps," he said. "Weekends like this you want to try conserve as much energy as you can when possible. Days can be quite long, and playing three days in a row is challenging so its good to get one three sets so we have options when we play tomorrow." In other World Group matches, France leads Australia 2-0, Kazakhstan leads Belgium 2-0, Germany is up 2-0 against Spain and Switzerland leads Serbia 2-0. The Canada-Japan, Italy-Argentina and Netherlands-Czech Republic matches are tied 1-1. Buffalo Bills Dawson Knox Jersey . The Nuggets and Suns will meet again in Denver on Friday. Denver has ripped off five straight wins, averaging 109.0 points in that time, and is 6-1 since a 1-6 start. The Nuggets handed the visiting Chicago Bulls a 114-109 setback on Tuesday, as Ty Lawson registered 20 points, 12 assists and three steals, and hit a big shot down the stretch to keep Chicago at bay. Lawson had 13 points in the third quarter and his basket with less than 30 seconds remaining kept Denvers win streak intact. It feels good to get back even (.500) and get back in the mix, Lawson said. Arron Afflalo added 19 points, and Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler tallied 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Nuggets, who were allowing 111.1 ppg through the first seven games and are allowing 99.0 ppg over the previous seven. The Nuggets are seventh in the league with 103.9 ppg, but still sit 26th in opponents scoring at 105.1. They are 6-0 when outshooting the opponent this seaason Phoenix went 4-2 on a recent road trip and had a four-game winning streak stopped with Mondays 104-100 loss at Toronto. Isaiah Thomas had 16 points and Gerald Green netted 13 for Phoenix, which shot 46.4 percent and hit 14-of-33 3-pointers. Thomas finished 4-of-6 from downtown. The Suns were down by as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter and took a 95-94 lead on a Bledsoe foul shot with three minutes to go. Toronto scored six of the games last eight points for the win. We made a comeback but our guys just made some bad plays, I thought, said Suns coach Jeff Hornacek. We gambled too much at the end. When youre making a big comeback from 17 down in the fourth quarter, you cant make any errors. Last season the Suns went 6-12 in games decided by five points or fewer. They are 3-2 in such games in 2014-15. Phoenix is fourth with 104.9 points per game and won all four meetings with Denver last season. The Nuggets have lost 15 of their last 18 trips to the desert. MEMPHIS, Tenn. Carolina Panthers Jerseys China . -- With Tony Allen back, the Memphis Grizzlies were able to turn up their defence pressure and hold off the Los Angeles Clippers down the stretch. Zach Randolph had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Marc Gasol added 17 points and 10 rebounds, and the Grizzlies survived a late rally for a 102-96 victory over the Clippers on Friday night. Allen, the Grizzlies defensive sparkplug, missed the previous 21 games with a sprained left wrist. His return sparked a defensive effort that held the Clippers to 33 per cent shooting in the second half and gave Memphis a double-digit lead that was enough of a buffer for the Grizzlies to win their fourth straight. Allen scored nine points on 4-of-4 shooting with two steals and a block. "With TA back in the lineup, its great," Randolph said. "Hes a leader on this team, and he gets guys going with his energy. What else can I say? Were happy to have him back." Allen drew a standing ovation when he entered the game late in the first quarter and seemed even more animated than usual in seeing his first action since Jan. 3. He said his goal was "to get in there and cause havoc." "I kind of had butterflies in my stomach when they did that," Allen said of the ovation, "but I got focused on the game." James Johnson added 15 for Memphis, and Mike Miller finished with 13, hitting 5 of 8 from the field. Courtney Lee scored 10 for Memphis. Gasol had four blocks. Blake Griffin led the Clippers with 28 points and 13 rebounds, and Jamal Crawford had 23 points. Chris Paul added 18 points and 14 assists, but was 4 of 13 from the field as Los Angeles lost its second straight. "It was just one of those games that we missed a lot of easy ones," Griffin said after Los Angeles shot 39 per cent for the game. Clippers coach Doc Rivers thought the game started slipping away in the second quarter. Rivers, who coached Allen in Boston, noted that he was a key. "I thought Tony Allen, Mike Miller and James Johnson turned the game around for them with their energy," Rivers said. Another key was the bench scoring. Memphis reserves outscored their Clippers counterparts 43-7. "When we dont score, thats fine," Rivers said, "but weve got to be able to get stops. Our second unit didnt kill this offence, they gave up 32 points defensively, and that thats what hurt us." The Grizzlies opened the fourth quarter connecting on their first four shots for an 11-4 run to take the lead to double digits. Mike Conleys layup gave Memphis an 84-72 lead with 9:23 remaining. The margin stayed between seven and 11 points, and Memphis still led by 10 approaching the 4-minute mark. But Los Angeles chipped away, and a pair of free throws from Paul brought the Clippers within 98-96 with 1:05 left. That was as close as Los Angeles could get. Memphis scored the last four points while the Clippers were missing their final four shots. As has become the norm when the two teams face each other, the play was physical and defence stout. "Every game we play against them is going to be a battle, and we understand that," Conley said. "Both teams get up for each other, and (Los Angeles) is the most competitive team, I think, as far as rivalries go." NOTES: Griffin has scored at least 25 points in 10 straight games. ... KANSAS CITY – His Blue Jays mired in their first prolonged slump of the season, losers of six of eight and prone to giving away games in which theyve enjoyed healthy leads, star shortstop Jose Reyes has noticed bad habits creeping into the teams games and wants them nipped in the bud. Richard Sherman Jersey . "We cannot stay the same way the whole season long," said Reyes. "This is not acceptable. Something needs to change because were a better team than what were showing right now. Its a long season and we just need to continue to push." Its been a frustrating week for the ballclub. Dating back to the start of the last homestand, a week ago Tuesday versus Baltimore, the Jays have lost four games in which theyve led by at least three runs. The bullpen, usually reliable, has allowed 23 earned runs in 25 2/3 innings (8.06 ERA) in that span. Making matters worse, the Jays played perhaps their worst game of the season on Tuesday in Kansas City, which starts a string of 20-consecutive games without a day off. There were fundamental mistakes sprinkled throughout, including a run-scoring throwing error; the Royals taking an extra base twice on balls hit to left field; an arcing fly ball that bounced on the warning track for a double to start the Kansas City comeback; and Edwin Encarnacion not hustling out a ground ball and wild throw with two runners on. "This is baseball," said Reyes. "Sometimes the stuff in baseball doesnt go perfect. Sometimes youre going to make a mistake but you have to learn from that mistake." Its early and the Jays entered action on Wednesday only three games behind the division-leading New York Yankees but Reyes doesnt want the club consistently giving away games any longer. "When you go through September, if youre competing for making the playoffs those are the games you say, Oh man, I lost those games in April and you see where we are now and we need those games," said Reyes. "But like I said thats in the past and as a player you have to put stuff in the past and try to get it the next day." LAWRIE OUT OF THE LINEUP Brett Lawrie missed his first game of the season on Wednesday night, sitting out with tightness in his back. The 24-year-old is hitting .192/.243/.384 in 107 plate appearances. His six home runs rank second on the club behind Jose Bautista (8). Lawrie leads the Blue Jays with 20 RBI. Lawrie gave no indication he was concerned for the long-term, deeming himself day-to-day. GIBBONS CONSIDERING McGOWANS ROLE Dustin McGowans six-inning, two earned run effort on Tuesday night may have earned him another start. "As of right now its going to stay the same," said manager John Gibbons. "Were still debating adding that extra guy for that long stretch. Weve got to decide quick." McGowan, a type 1 diabetic, wore his insulin pump for the first time in an attempt to regulate his blood sugar and maintain energy throughout the game. It worked. McGowan alluded to "feeling stronger" as the night progressed. "He did a helluva job (Tuesday) night," said Gibbons. "Hes probably going to start again. My only reservation about it is how good he was in the bullpen. Weve struggled at times down there. Im still not sure where it all leads." On top of McGowans move out of the bullpen, Gibbons is without his closer, Casey Janssen, meaning hes down two quality late-game right-handers. JANSSEN THROWS BULLPEN Casey Janssen is making tangible progress toward his much-anticipated return from an oblique strain. He threw a bullpen session of more than 30 pitches on Wednesday. "Yeah, pain free, just trying to get my arm to work fast again," said Janssen. "I didnt get much of a spring training and want that to start building up and getting strong and getting used to the grind of throwing all those pitches off a slope and throwing aggressively." Janssen will throw another bullpen on Friday in Pittsburgh. If all goes well hell head out on another, hopefully his final, rehabilitation assignment. Hell ask the Blue Jays to place him at Double-A New Hampshire, hoping for better competition than he would get at Single-A Dunedin. Janssen also wants to be closer to Toronto and with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons scheduled to play early next week against the Braves affiliate just outside Atlanta, New Hampshire seems the appropriate spot. As for the recent struggles of his bullpen mates, Janssen doesnt expect the issues to persist. "Honestly, I kind of use this line, but I truly feel that zeroes can be contagious," he said. "When everyones putting up zeroes it seems easier to put up zeroes. Unfortunately when those hitters are comfortable in the box and putting good swings, their confidence level goes up and makes our job a little bit tougher. Its the same guys that had unbelievable years last year, and I dont want the first month to skew anybodys vision of what our bullpen is and what they can be, because its an electric bullpen." LIND TO RESUME BASEBALL ACTIVITIES Adam Lind, out with lower back tightness, is eligible to come off the disabled list on Thursday. He wont be back then but the Blue Jays are hopeful his return will come soon. "Hes feeling better," said Gibbons. "Hes going to take some ground balls either today or tomorrow. Hes swinging the bat. Hes starting to feel better. They backed him off a couple of days ago because it was still irritating him but hes back to go." Lind is under the care of team doctors in Dunedin, Florida. He received a medicinal injection nine days ago to alleviate his symptoms. Hell appear in at least one extended spring training game and could play in a Gulf Coast League game before rejoining the Blue Jays no sooner than this weekend in Pittsburgh. Cortez Kennedy Jersey . MILWAUKEE -- One slugger back, one slugger down for the Milwaukee Brewers. Custom Browns Jerseys . Outfielder Ryan Braun has been activated from the 15-day disabled list after being sidelined with a right oblique strain. He started Tuesday nights game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez was placed on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring. He got hurt fielding a bouncer in Saturday nights 5-4 win over the Yankees. The battered Brewers lost another key player when outfielder Carlos Gomez left the Pirates game after the bottom of the fifth with lower back tightness. He was considered day-to-day. Braun was hitting .318 with six homers and 18 RBIs when he got hurt. Seeing Ramirez go down didnt add any extra urgency, Braun said. The Brewers had discussed possibly sending Braun to the minors for a rehab game Monday but weather and travel issues curtailed that plan. Instead, the slugger was back his customary No. 3 position in the batting order Tuesday. "I think hes going to be good. Hes a guy that when he sat in the past hes been pretty good right off, so Im hoping thats what happens," manager Ron Roenicke said. Neither Roenicke nor Ramirez knew how long it might take for the veteran third baseman to get over his pulled hamstring, the first such injury of Ramirezs 16-year career. Milwaukee on Tuesday also optioned outfielder Caleb Gindl back to Triple-A Nashville and recalled utility man Elian Herrera, who was batting .359 in the minors. Herreras versatility should help if Gomez has to begin a suspension this week for his role in a benches-clearing scrum against the Pirates in April. Milwaukee expected to hear soon from the National League about Gomezs appeal. It has been a tough few days for Gomez. Milwaukees leadoff hitter was hit in the left forearm by a pitch Sunday against the Yankees; he was hit on the arm again Tuesday on a changeup by Pirates starter Gerrit Cole. MINSK, Belarus - For the second time at the world hockey championship, Team Canada benefited from a five-minute major penalty. Derek Roy Jersey . Only this time it could prove much more costly. Alex Burrows was knocked out of the game by a knee-on-knee hit and did not return for the rest of Canadas 6-1 win over Italy on Friday at Chizhovka Arena. Cody Hodgson scored on the ensuing power play from the five-minute major penalty on Italian forward Joachim Ramoser. But with goals from Joel Ward, Jason Chimera, Kyle Turris, another from Hodgson and a final one from Brayden Schenn, Canada probably didnt need that boost. Against the Czech Republic on Monday, Canada scored twice on a five-minute major after captain Kevin Bieksa took a stick to the face, chipping a tooth and requiring stitches in his mouth. Bieksa didnt miss a shift. His Vancouver Canucks teammate Burrows was not so lucky. After writhing in pain after the hit, he needed to be helped off the ice by teammates Brayden Schenn and Nathan MacKinnon and did not put any pressure on his right leg. Without Burrows and defenceman Jason Garrison, who did not dress because of an illness, Canada was down to 18 skaters to Italys 20. That wasnt a factor as the Canadians won for the fifth time in six games to set up a likely Group A title game against Sweden on Sunday. In stopping 21 of the 22 shots he faced, James Reimer might have won the right to start that game, though Ben Scrivens won each of his two starts. Through the first five games in Minsk, neither goalie has been tested by a strong opponent. That included Friday, when Canada rolled over Italy. After Italy had Canada on its heels in the early going, Ward continued his strong tournament by scoring the games first goal at 13:07. Ward forced a neutral-zone turnover, had Mark Scheifele going to the net on the rush and snapped a shot short-side on Daniel Bellissimo, a Toronto native. Ramoser made what looked like unintentional knee-on-knee contact with Burrows with 56 seconds left in the first period. A minute and 39 seconds into the second, Hodgson scored on a rebound to make it 2-0. Canadas third goal came at even strength but with a delayed penalty on Italy as Ward drew a call before Scheifele set up Chimera on a two-on-one rush at 6:02. Not long after at the 9:19 mark, Matt Read got things going and delivered a sharp pass to Turris for his second short-handed goal in as many games. Hodgson added his second of the day and sixth of the tournament 16:15 into the second with a rebound goal from in tight on Bellissimo that made it 5-0. Bellissimo did not return at the start of the third after giving up five goals on 22 shots, replaced by backup Andreas Bernard. Italy then broke up Reimers shutout 1:12 into the third period on a deflection goal by David Borrelli, who is from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. At 16:30, Schenn scored to put the finishing touch on the rout. Notes: Bellissimo and Borrelli are two of 10 Canadian-born players on Italys roster. MIAMI -- Erik Spoelstra said he mentioned how daunting the task would be only once. Rams Jerseys China . Back in September, when the Miami Heat assembled to begin training camp, Spoelstra addressed his team about furthering its championship legacy and how rare it is for a team to find its way to the NBA Finals in four consecutive seasons. "Weve never brought it up since then," Spoelstra said. Itll get brought up now. The seed the Heat coach planted in the Bahamas at that training camp took root. The Heat are finals-bound -- for the fourth straight time. The sputtering stretches of play in March and April, surrendering the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs to Indiana, winning 12 fewer games in this regular season than a year ago, they all seem moot and meaningless now. The Heat have a chance at a third consecutive NBA title, with the finals starting Thursday night against San Antonio in a title-series rematch. "Its amazing to make it to one finals," Heat forward Shane Battier said. "To do it four times in a row for some of these guys, its a tremendous, tremendous accomplishment and it speaks volumes to the dedication, luck, and perseverance that you need to do it." Spoelstra spoke of that luck factor when he gathered his team for a locker-room huddle moments after the celebration started Friday night, after Miami wrapped up its fourth straight East crown with a 117-92 win over Indiana to win the series in six games. His words were interrupted twice by LeBron James, which nobody minded. "We dont take this for granted," Spoelstra said. "No, sir," James added, nodding. "We do not take it for granted," Spoelstra repeated. "No way," James interjected. "How tough it actually is and how many things have to go our way," Spoelstra continued. "Four times, you guys who havent been here with us the whole time, you guys inherit everything that weve experienced." Only six current Heat players appeared in the 2011 post-season, Miamis first of the "Big 3" era and the last in which it actually lost a series. James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Mario Chalmers, James Jones and Udonis Haslem are the last holdovers. Battier and Norris Cole arrived after the 2011 finals loss. Ray Allen, Chris Andersen and Rashard Lewis -- all playing huge roles these days for Miami -- came after the first title run of this Heat era in 2012. The core of last seasons title squad, with the exception of amnestied Mike Miller, was back to try it again this time around. Even with all that talent, with that championship experience, Spoelstra knew a tone had to be immediately set when the season began. "What I was really encouraged about was our attendance and commitment in training camp in the Bahamas," Spoelstra said. "Right from there, and we communicated during the summer that, if were real about this, about how difficult that journey is, that you cannot shortcut, that we would show it immediately in training camp." Theyre still showing it now. Miami is 12-3 in these playoffs, 8-0 at home, and has won a road game in 15 straight post-season series. The Heat will need to extend that streak to win the NBA Finals; the Spurs will hold home-court advantage. "Obviously, going through the weeks and weeks and weeks and grinding months of a regular season, it was a toll on all of us," James said. "But I felt like down the stretch, if we could get healthy, we could get everyone in uniform and have our full strength, it didnt matter what seed we were. I felt like we can represent the Eastern Conference again in the finals if we had the health, and we were able to accomplish that." At times, like Friday night, they make winning look easy. Collectively, they insist its much harder than it appears. "You still have to go out and do it every single night," Allen said. "Its the toughest thing Ive ever done and I guarantee the guys in this locker room would say the same thing." Only the Lakers and Celtics have appeared in four straight finals, with Boston (1984-87) the last to do so. Wade was 5 when that run ended, James was 2, and Cole, Michael Beasley and Greg Oden hadnt even been born. Now the Heat are in that club. And regarding what Spoelstra said in that first-day conversation, the point of his words then has become perfectly clear to his team now. "Having a chance to win is always a special thing," Bosh said. "We always talk about not taking it for granted from Day One. We know its a very long season. It has its rewards in the end if we stick together and do what were supposed to do. But it hasnt really hit us yet. I would rather it hit me in two weeks." Couples ended a 16-event winless streak dating to the Senior British Open in July 2012, closing with a 2-under 69 for a six-stroke victory over Bernhard Langer, Peter Senior and Mark OMeara. The Hall of Famer has nine victories in four seasons on the 50-and-over tour after winning 15 times on the PGA Tour. "Its great to win. It seems like four years ago," Couples said. "Now I have 60 days to lose all my momentum." After playing 15 events on the Champions Tour this year and finishing third in the points race, Couples indicated he was going to play at least two or three more events next year and take a shot at winning the Charles Schwab Cup. His points finish earned him a bonus $300,000 annuity. "This tour, to win the Schwab Cup, Ill play a lot and I hope to play well," Couples said. Id like to have the kind of year Kenny had. The goal is to win the Cup. The goal is to play." Couples finished at 17-under 267 at TPC Harding Park. "This year, I wouldnt call it a waste, but it was a waste as far as not winning," he said. "This week was different. I did not miss many shots. I got the lead and I kept it. Im not a fierce competitor but I love the competition. Just winning, even if its a club championship, youre thrilled." Langer, second behind Perry in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, shot a 67. Senior had a 69, and OMeara closed with a double bogey for a 70. Perry had a 68 to tie for fifth at 10 under. He led the tour with three victories, taking the Senior Players Champiionship and U. Bobby Evans Jersey. S. Senior Open in consecutive tour starts and winning the AT&T Championship last week in San Antonio. "Its been a magical season," said Perry, who was accompanied by his wife, three daughters, their husbands and a couple of grandchildren. "This is my highest accomplishment. Ive been close to winning a major on the PGA Tour and to finally win a few this year, its the things dreams are made of." Perry, who took over the points lead in July, joked all week about how he had a 29-1 chance of winning the points race. Langer needed to win the tournament and have Perry finish outside the top five to win. "Im thinking Ive got to play," Perry said. "All year my head was everywhere and I was trying to focus. But the dream came true. I was, probably, playing the best golf Ive ever played. I cant wait to go out and celebrate with my family." Couples earned $440,000 and finished fourth on the Champions Tour money list with $1,706,812. Langer topped the money list with $2,448,428, and Perry was second at $2,241,188. "Fred played very well," OMeara said. "He did what he had to do. Its not easy with the lead. He drove the ball pretty darn good and he putted pretty well and thats what it takes." Cutting his teeth on a public course in Seattle, Couples said TPC Harding Park, which will undergo an extensive renovation on the greens, always was a special place for him. "Ive said it all week. Its Harding Park. This is a tremendous golf course," he said. "It doesnt seem really hard but if you miss the ball in the wrong spot, or miss the green, it can play really hard. Its one of my all-time favourites." Roy was making his first start with the Heat and was seven minutes away from his first career AHL shutout. The 22-year-old was acquired by the Calgary Flames from the Edmonton Oilers on Nov. 8, but was immediately assigned to their ECHL affiliate Alaska before his call up when Joey MacDonald suffered a concussion last week. When Joni Ortio was recalled to the Flames on Sunday to replace the injured Kari Ramo, Roy got his chance to start. Corban Knight had a goal and two assists to lead the way offensively. Max Reinhart and Markus Granlund had a goal and an assist, while Josh Jooris, Blair Jones, Ben Street and Carter Bancks also scored for Abbotsford (30-14-4). The Heat have now won three straight and are 4-0-2 in their past six games. With the win they move into a tie for first in the Western Conference with Grand Rapids. John Muse allowed four first-period goals on just 12 shots before Mike Murphy relieved him, making 24 saves for Charlotte (22-22-1) Philippe Cornet scored the lone Checkers goal. The Heat opened the scoring at 4:29 of the first. Jooris finished off a great Heat possession, one-timing a pass from Corey Locke in the high slott off the post and in, beating Muse glove side. Chris Terry cut to the front of the net from the corner and tried to wrap the puck around Roys right pad, but the 2009 fifth-round choice stretched out his leg to cover the far post, keeping his team up by one. Reinhart scored at 8:54 on the same power play to make it 2-0. Granlund fed it to Knight, who quickly found Reinhart backdoor for the one-timer. The Heat chased Muse from the crease with two goals in 28 seconds. First, Jones one-timed Derek Smiths set up from the left face-off dot on the power play. Then Bancks collected Lane MacDermids rebound before backhanding home a goal. Granlund scored another power-play goal, taking a loose puck in the slot and whipping one past Murphy at 8:17 of the third to give him his team-leading 20th goal of the season. Two minutes later Knight deflected Smiths point shot past Murphy to make it 6-0. Cornet broke Roys shutout bid with seven minutes to go after he one-timed Victor Rasks centring feed just inside the post. HOUSTON -- The Texas Rangers put left-handers Matt Harrison and Martin Perez on the disabled list Wednesday, and could be without both starters for an extended period. Christian Wilkins Jersey . General manager Jon Daniels said that Harrison was diagnosed with significant nerve irritation in his vertebrae. He will have an injection Friday in an attempt to alleviate the symptoms before considering other options, including surgery. Harrison, who made only two starts last season before two operations on a herniated disk in his lower back, came out in the second inning of his start Tuesday night at Houston. Daniels said the pitcher had a tingling sensation down his left leg, similar to what he experienced before having surgery last year. Perez has a partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. He could have an injection and rehab that could keep him out three months, or possibly have Tommy John surgery and miss a year. Right-hander Nick Tepesch was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock for his scheduled start Wednesday night against Houston. The Rangers also purchased the contracts of right-handers Scott Baker and Miles Mikolas from Round Rock, and designated right-hander Justin Germano for assignment. Tepesch was starting in place of Yu Darvish, who threw 126 pitches in his near no-hitter Friday night. The Japanese ace was given extended rest and is set to start Friday at home against Toronto. When Tepesch took the mound against the Astros, he became the 22nd different player to pitch for the Rangers this season and the 38th player overall. Both are the most in the majors. Texas has 13 players on the disabled list. Among the other hurt Rangers is left-handed starter Derek Holland, who is rehabbing from off-season left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on the stairs in his home. Holland, who has been throwing live batting practice at the Rangers complex in Arizona, is scheduled to be in Arlington this weekend for an evaluation and to throw for Rangers coaches. He is still several weeks away from a possible return. Perez allowed six runs and 14 runners (nine hits, four walks and a hit batter) in 3 2-3 innings of an 8-3 loss to Boston on Saturday night, and reported discomfort in his elbow the following day. Since the end of his 26-inning scoreless streak over three games, Perez (4-3) has given up 19 runs over 13 1-3 innings in his past three games. Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister diagnosed the partial tear for Perez. Dr. James Andrews also reviewed the MRI and agreed that was the issue. Harrison was examined Wednesday by Dr. Drew Dossett, who did the two operations last year. Daniels said there was no evidence of disk herniation, but that the spondylolisthesis Harrison is now experiencing was considered a possible risk after the operations -- "If it didnt work as you would hope, this would be the outcome. Unfortunately, thats come to pass," the GM said. The options for Harrison included rehab and to live with the problem or have surgery that Daniels described as spinal fusion. Daniels said players have returned to the major leagues after have such fusions, but there are no guarantees. "Its more involved surgery and changes of coming back are lesser than some of the more traditional baseball surgeries," Daniels said. "If he did opt to have surgery, he would be out for the year with a chance to rehab and come in and compete in spring training." Infielder Donnie Murphy (neck strain) and left-hander Joe Saunders (left ankle) are scheduled to begin injury rehabilitation assignments with Round Rock on Thursday night. It will be the first rehab game for Murphy and the third for Saunders, who made only his first start of the season for the Rangers. Wholesale Dolphins Jerseys Authentic . We caught up with members of the Sky Sports golf team and other pundits ahead of the Masters and got their tips for the first major of the season. Chicago Bears Riley Ridley Jersey . Two-time winner Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day are among the leading fancies but defending champion Jordan Spieth doesnt get a vote from the pundits.Heres who they think will be challenging for the famous Green Jacket come Sunday night.Colin MontgomerieAdam Scott is confident coming off back-to back wins last month. I truly believe his putting is better with the short putter. Adam Scott won back-to-back titles on the PGA Tour earlier this year A recent winner of the Valspar and back in good form, Im going for Charl Schwartzel. The Masters is 75% about putting, and Charl is as good a putter as you can get and hes a previous winner.Paul McGinleyAlthough hoping for a European win my favourite is Bubba Watson. He has won twice there in the past, the course suits his strength of shot-making and left handers seem to win there more often than any other venue in the world. His recent form has been excellent and is a player who will rise to the big occasion and the pressures of the back nine on Sunday. My outside bet is Patrick Reed. He has shown a lot of good form so far this year without it all coming together in a win yet. He is a man for the big occasion as well as a tremendous competitor. His natural ball flight of right to left is suited to Augusta.Rob LeeBubba Watson is my favourite is a two-time winner and has already won this year at Riviera. Bubba Watson is already a two-time champion at Augusta Nobody in the history of the game has been more suited to a venue than Bubba and Augusta. 325 yd wipe fades give him an enormous advantage. He struggles on slow greens but is fine when he just has to tickle it. My outsider is Patrick Reed, a guy who doesnt struggle to draw the ball and is right up there with the best pitchers in the world and has no shortage of self confidence. He has a complete golf game.Nick DoughertyRory McIlroy maybe still looking for a win this year but his game has been trending in the right direction in recent weeks. Dougherty expects McIlroy to impress and challenge for a fifth major title He has had chances to win in his last three starts with one off day costing him each time. His recent fourth place at the WGC Match Play, and his hunger to get back to the top of the world rankings, will give him the edge to string four good rounds together and win the major that will give him the career grand slam on a course his game was built for.Rafa Cabrera-Bello is my other pick. He started the year ranked 114 in the world and now sits at 36, he has been in blistering form. Fresh off the back of a third place at the WGC which earned him his spot at Augusta his confidence is sky high. He hits the ball a long way and his yardage control with his iron play is second to none which is essential to do well at Augusta. It is his first visit to Augusta and experience counts for a lot around this course but on confidence and quality of form alone, the Spaniard has a great chance at this years Masters. Cabrera-Bello has been on an impressive run of form David HowellMy favourite has to be Jason Day, coming off another huge win, back to No 1 in the world and has played well at the Masters over the last few years. No one comes in with more confidence and there just are no question marks about any aspect of his golf right now. For me he is the clear favourite with our boy Rory nestled in right behind.Charl Schwartzel is my outsider, if you can call a former champion an outsider? Charl has won a couple of times in the last few months but not in the biggest of events, but I liked what I read from him early in the year when he said he had been working hard and was hitting it as well as he ever had. If thats true then he is a match for anyone, and a great each way bet.Sky Sports football pundit Jamie Redknapp Redknapp has been a passionate golfer since his retirement from football Bubba Watson is my pick. He won it the year before last and hes in good form and hes about 14/1, which is a great bet, each way.The other player I like, hes a bit more of an outsider, I love watching this guy play, is Louis Oosthuizen, again each way.Soccer Saturday pundit Matt Le Tissier Im backing fellow Hampshire lad Justin Rose as he always seems to set himself up to produce in the majors. Rory McIlroy is my other tip, who showed signs in the WGC Match Play that he was coming back to some sort of form with a top-four finish.Cricket legend and Sky Sports pundit Sir Ian Botham Sir Ian Botham in action Danny Willett is my pick. Hell be buzzing after the birth of his first child and is in great form after his victory in Dubai in February.Super Sunday and Monday Night football host Ed ChamberlinThe medias focus will firmly be on the big three - Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy - which could play into the hands of Adam Scott and he looks a great bet at 11/1.Ill also be having my annual each-way stab on Matt Kuchar at 66/1. Eoin Morgans men were beaten by four wickets after Carlos Brathwaite smashed four consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes to win the game with two balls to spare, having needed 19 off the final over. However, Atherton insisted reaching the final, and coming so close to bringing home the trophy, is a fine achievement and shows the progress made since last years disastrous World Cup campaign. 12 months ago they were bundled out of the 2015 World Cup at the group stages, a long way behind in terms of strategy and selection from other countries, playing a different type of cricket really, he said.I think the difficulty for many of us watching in 2015 was that we felt the ingredients were there in county cricket, plenty of exciting and dynamic young players who werent being given a chance.I think you can handle a defeat like that when you can see a side is playing the right type of cricket, youre going to win more games than you lose, or win as many as you lose, if you play like that. Jos Buttler has excelled for England in white-ball cricket Indeed, Atherton is confident that England can continue to progress with a talented group of players who have yet to reach thheir peak. Chicago Bears David Montgomery Jersey. Theyre on the right track, he added. Theyre right when they say this side is still two or three years away from full maturity when you look at the age profile of the team and the number of games played.Theyll always feel that theyre a player or two away from being right but theres a lot of growth left in this team and the signs are definitely good. The Champions Trophy in 2017 is in England, the World Cup 2019 is in England so there they have home advantage to boot as well, so promising signs. As for the match itself, the Sky Sports pundit and former England captain felt it was a fitting end to an entertaining tournament. Carlos Brathwaite celebrates smashing West Indies to victory An incredible end to an incredible tournament, said Atherton. There were a lot of things we didnt see coming there - Joe Root bowling the second over and getting England into the game, then almost the game in the bag.A couple of bad balls where Stokes has missed his yorker length but incredible brute power and strength from Brathwaite and there is the modern game. Jonathan Toews says the 2010 Chicago Blackhawks were "oblivious" to how well they were playing on the way to capturing the Stanley Cup. Cheap New York Jets Gear . The 2013 Cup took some more thought. "This time around we know definitely how much work it takes and how much sacrifice it takes to get back here," the Blackhawks captain said after the Blackhawks beat Boston in six games to claim their fifth NHL title. It also took more work for general manager Stan Bowman to rebuild from scratch. Salary-cap constraints meant saying goodbye to goaltender Antti Niemi, left-wingers Andrew Ladd and Kris Versteeg, forward/defenceman Dustin Byfuglien and others. Bowman simply changed his roster on the fly, watching draft picks like goalie Corey Crawford, forwards Bryan Bickell, Brandon Saad and Dave Bolland blossom, signing defenceman Michal Rozsival and trading for centre Michal Handzus and defenceman Johnny Oduya. The result was a championship that he has his fingerprints on. "Its hard to win and you have to make some changes, sort of retool a little bit," Bowman said. "Im proud of everybody. Its been a long road to get here and this is sort of the culmination of a lot of hard work for a lot of people." Bowman, named for the Cup by his legendary father, Scotty, was around the trophy plenty throughout his life. Even though Scotty won it nine times, that never devalued the long road of getting there. "Hes a calm guy. I think he realizes how tough it is," Scotty Bowman said. "Thats the thing about the Stanley Cup is its so tough to win that when you do win it, youre delirious." Perhaps not delirious, but coach Joel Quenneville was more candid than usual as he stood on the ice at TD Garden while his players posed for pictures with the trophy that already has his name on it once. "Its always the greatest feeling in the world," Quenneville said. "Once you do it, you cant wait to do it again. The stories, the ups and downs and the process of trying to win a Cup, thats what makes it so special." The Blackhawks only had eight players back from that 2010 Cup team: Toews, Conn Smythe-winner Patrick Kane, Patrick Sharp, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Marian Hossa, Dave Bolland and Niklas Hjalmarsson. The core group, led by Toews, Kane, Sharp and Keith, lost in the first round in 2011 and 2012. Chicago ran into a Vancouver Canucks team that was one win away from the Cup and then a hot goaltender in Mike Smith of the Phoenix Coyotes. "I thought we had two good lessons to learn," Quenneville said of those playoff exits. "The core put it all into place. Those guys that were there before, their guidance, their leadership at critical times made the difference." It wouldve been easy for Bowman to be reactionary and fidget with his core after not winning a playoff series in the two years following a championship. But the hockey lifer wisely chose to maintain the course. "I knew we had a very good team here," he said. "We do an analysis and break it down and there were so many good things that happened that you dont want to throw everything out the window." Instead, Bowman tweaked around the edges. Draft picks like Crawford, Bolland and Bickell from the previous regime under Dale Tallon turned out, mixing well with Saad, Andrew Shaw and those Bowman and his scouting staff selected. "The fact that Stan had to make so many decisions right after we won makes this one even sweeter," Sharp said. "He decided (to keep) myself and a couple of other guys around. I feel proud to be part of this organization and to win it again." Even after watching as the Blackhawks started the season with an NHL-record 24-game point streak, Bowman wasnt satisfied. His final move was to get Handzus from the San Jose Sharks before the trade deadline, and the 36-year-old was the second-line centre and the first player to get the Cup from Toews on Monday night. Handzus could immediately appreciate what it all meant. "It shows its great core here, a lot of leaders," he said. "The guys they brought in, they play great. I was the last guy, but I was just trying to fill in. The whole year, they play great." This championship was all about a changing roster and consistent performance this season. The Blackhawks became the first Presidents Trophy winners to also capture the Stanley Cup since the 2008 Detroit Red Wings. Kane said before the Cup final that he and his teammates wanted to thank Bowman for not blowing up the core. Even with the increased pressure that came with the streak and the most points in the NHL, the Blackhawks got it done. "I think its pretty much the same group as last year with maybe a couple differences," he said. "We wanted to prove ourselves all year, especially to maybe our own organization that kept us together, that were here, we can do some special things." Stitched New York Jets Jerseys . NEW YORK -- As bad as his back felt Thursday, Davey Johnson was all smiles after what most likely was his final trip to New York as a big league manager. Sam Reinhart Jersey . His Nationals made it real easy for him to grin. Ryan Zimmerman, Adam LaRoche and Wilson Ramos homered off Aaron Harang in his Mets debut, and Washington beat New York 7-2 Thursday to complete a four-game sweep. "A lot of fun, a lot of fun," Johnson said. "A lot of good things all around." The 70-year-old, who is retiring after the season, led the Mets to the 1986 World Series championship and he said he enjoyed his time in the organization, not only with the big league club but also while managing in the minors. He tried to loosen up his back by walking in the outfield before batting practice. While reminiscing about his days at old Shea Stadium, Johnson switched to the present, saying: "It would make my day if we sweep them here -- it would make my year." And the Nationals obliged, with another power display. Anthony Rendon also connected for Washington, which outhomered the Mets 13-0 in a series that helped the Nationals remain on the fringe of the NL wild-card race. They moved within 5 1/2 games of idle Cincinnati for the final spot with the rain-interrupted win. "Were in a place now where we got to win. Usually when you playing that type of baseball where youre forced to win, you either do or you dont. Well see what happens the rest of the way." Zimmerman added an RBI double in the eighth after Denard Span extended his career-best hitting streak to 23 games with a leadoff double. The Nationals won 17 of those games. "Its fun having a guy like that at the top of the order," Zimmerman said. The Mets have lost nine of 11 and fallen to 64-81, ensuring their fifth straight non-winning record -- all at Citi Field. "There are expectations that come when youre a big league player. And part of those expectations is the ability to execute when you need to. And were not doing that right now," Mets manager Terry Collins said. Tanner Roark (6-0) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings of his second big league start. Roark pitched six scoreless innings Sunday against Miami. Johnson said if the 56-minute delay had gone more than an hour, Roark wouldnt have come back in the second inning. With the win, Roark became the first player in the franchise to win his first six decisions since Jeff Juden in 1996-97 for Montreal. "After the third inning, I settled down," Roark said. "Offspeed and slider really worked today." New York signed Harang (0-1) to a minor league deal on Sept. 1, less than a week after the team learned ace Matt Harvey had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow. Harang allowed the three homers and a single in six innings, struck out 10 and walked one. The right-hander was 5-11 with a 5.76 ERA in 22 starts this year for the Seattle Mariners. "I felt good with throwing some of my pitches," Harang said. "Besides really the two mistake pitches I felt really good about my day." It was all or nothing for the Nationals against Harang until Bryce Harper singled to centre with two outs in the sixth. Harang gave up only the three homers and struck out 10 before Harpers hit. Span was the only Nationals player that spent any time on the bases -- he walked with one out in the third. Zimmerman homered for the eighth time in 10 games with one out in the first, a drive to straightaway centre. The Mets evened the score on Daniel Murphys RBI double in the bottom half. After the delay, LaRoche hit a drive to left-centre that Eric Young Jr. appeared to knock back into play with a leap at the wall. But after a video review of more than three minutes, umpires ruled a home run that gave Washington a 2-1 lead. It was LaRoches fourth homer in 32 at-bats against Harang. The Mets tied it again on Anthony Reckers RBI single to left field in the fourth. The Mets mightve run themselves out of a big inning when Mike Baxter was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play. Ramos homered leading off the fifth to put Washington ahead for good. After Reckers hit, Roark retired seven of his final eight batters. New York had runners on second and third in the seventh but Craig Stammen struck out Juan Lagares to end the chance. Rendon hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh and homered in the ninth. NOTES: The Nationals 13 homers were a record for a single series at Citi Field. The Yankees hit seven in 2012. ... Double-A Binghamton manager Pedro Lopez joined the Mets as a coach. He guided Binghamton to 86 wins and a trip to the Eastern League playoffs. ... The Nationals will hold a ceremony to honour the victims and first responders of Sept. 11, 2001, on Friday, when Washington opens a 10-game homestand against Philadelphia. Pat Lafontaine Jersey . DENVER -- Peyton Manning walked away a winner in the biggest game of the year so far and, as a bonus, the Broncos might not even have to send his uniform off to the cleaners. Eagles Jerseys China . Manning threw for 323 yards and a touchdown Sunday night and was barely touched by Kansas Citys sack-happy defence in Denvers 27-17 victory over the NFLs last undefeated team. It means the 72 Dolphins can rest easy for another year. And it puts Denver and the Chiefs in a tie atop the AFC West at 9-1, with a rematch set in two weeks. Manning has another big game before that -- at New England in yet another showdown against Tom Brady. If the Broncos offensive line does anywhere near as good a job in that one as it did against the Chiefs, the quarterbacks ailing ankles -- mummified with athletic tape for this critical game -- should be feeling much better. "The protection was outstanding, we ran the ball consistently, tried to keep them off-balance," Manning said. "We wanted a mix of running and passing game and Im really proud of those guys up front." With Lindsey Vonn and boyfriend Tiger Woods on the sideline to watch the NFLs must-see game of the year, the Denver offensive line, featuring tackles Chris Clark and Orlando Franklin, shut out Kansas Citys sack duo of Justin Houston and Tamba Hali along with the rest of the KC defence, which came in with a league-leading 36 sacks. "I think they did a good job of getting the ball out fast," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "They worked the pocket well. A few times we had pressure, you saw him slide and throw the ball out, which isnt easy to do. But we can do a better job there. We can get a little more pressure on him and well work on that." Any pressure at all would be an improvement. The Chiefs didnt record a single hit on Manning and he was barely touched all night. In fact, his most notable contact came in the first quarter when he and Montee Ball flubbed a handoff that Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson scooped up. Johnson was barrelling toward the end zone and what couldve been a 7-3 lead. Manning lowered his shoulder and tripped him up. The Chiefs offence came out and fullback Anthony Sherman promptly fumbled the ball back to the Broncos. "That was a huge turning point," said Broncos interim coach Jack Del Rio, now 2-0 running the show in Denver while John Fox recovers from heart surgery. Three plays after his tackle, Manning made the games biggest play on offence, spotting receiver Demaryius Thomas in single coverage on the sideline for a 70-yard gain that set up the quarterbacks lone touchdown pass -- a 9-yard strike to Julius Thomas for a 10-0 lead. The Chiefs defence, which came into the game also leading the league in points allowed (12.8), remained stout throughout against the leagues highest-scoring offence (41.2). But eventually, Manning and Co., overwhelmed them, going 79, 65 and 62 yards for their last three scores and a 27-10 lead. Ball capped two of the drives, once from 1 yard and another time from 8, to atone for the fumble, which was actually charged to Manning. "We knew that once we got down to the red zone, getting touchdowns was critical," Manning said. "They make teams settle for field goals down there." The Chiefs, who hadnt lost since a 38-3 setback in Denver last December to close out a 2-14 season, hadnt allowed more than 17 points all year -- a simple and effective explanation for one of the biggest turnarounds in NFL history. But the offence, led by Alex Smith, simply isnt built to win a high-scoring showdown. Smith finished with 230 yards and two touchdowns. He completed four passes for 57 yards to Dwayne Bowe, who started, as promised, while his legal case for marijuana possession plays out. Jamaal Charles, who came in leading the AFC in rushing with 725 yards, added 78 to that. "We didnt do a good enough job offensively," Reid said. "Thats my responsibility. Were a young football team. Well get it worked out and fixed and get better next week. " The game-time temperature of 43 degrees brought Mannings blue-and-grey glove out for the first time this season but didnt slow the quarterback or his offence at all. Knowshon Moreno ran for 79 yards and kept the chains moving for Denver, while Wes Welker took his turn as Mannings favourite target, catching eight passes for 72 yards before leaving to be evaluated for a possible concussion. Though one touchdown pass marked a season low for Manning, it gave him 71 in his year-plus with the Broncos, already tying him for third in franchise history with Jake Plummer and Brian Griese. His 34 on the season are still on pace to break the record of the man hell face next week -- Brady -- in yet another big game for the Broncos, this time at New England. While the Chiefs got shut out on the sack end -- didnt even record a hit on Manning -- Shaun Phillips had a monster game for the Broncos: 10 tackles, two quarterback hits, two pass deflections and 1.5 sacks to more than make up for an off night from Von Miller, who only had one tackle. Clayton Thorson Jersey .Brady threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to Julian Edelman midway through the fourth quarter, and New England beat the San Diego Chargers 23-14 for its eighth win in nine games. Spain lost to Canada last year. The 35-year-old Haas served out the match to give Germany its first victory over Spain since 1994, and then led the celebrations in front of the enthusiastic home crowd. TSN. Jim Plunkett Jersey .ca presents its first weekly power rankings for the 2013-14 Barclays Premier League staff. Rankings were weighted evenly between separate lists made by TSN Radio host and soccer analyst Gareth Wheeler as well as TSN.cas soccer editors. 1. Manchester City (4-0 win over Newcastle United). Highest ranking: 1 Lowest ranking: 2 Manuel Pellegrini promised a more open style of play and his new troops delivered. City beat Newcastle 4-0 in a game that really wasnt in doubt from David Silvas opening marker in the sixth minute. Sergio Aguero, who battled injuries last season, scored on a great run and Yaya Toure picked up the highlight goal of the game from a free-kick. It wasnt all positive for City, as defender Vincent Kompany left the game with injury and is expected to miss a few games. They will have to reshape their defence minus their captain, who does a great job marshalling the backline. 2. Manchester United (4-1 win over Swansea City). Highest ranking: 1 Lowest ranking: 3 The Champions began their defence with a very convincing 4-1 victory over Swansea City. Robin van Persie picked up right where he left off with a two goal performance. Wayne Rooneys future with the team might still be in doubt, but even he looked good when he entered the game as a second half substitute. David Moyes team has a rough opening schedule but were ready right out of the gate. 3. Chelsea (2-0 win over Hull, 2-1 win over Aston Villa) Highest ranking: 2 Lowest ranking: 3 Jose Mourinhos new side earned victories over Hull City and Aston Villa in the opening week of the season. They looked exactly as good as advertised, especially in the first victory over Hull, but in both cases wasted chances that could have put both game more out of reach. Lots of players played well for Chelsea but Frank Lampard has probably been their best player over the six point start to the season. 4. Tottenham Hotspur (1-0 win over Crystal Palace) Highest ranking: 4 Lowest ranking: 6 With Gareth Bale still on the roster but not available for action, Spurs earned a narrow 1-0 victory over newly promoted Crystal Palace. Tottenham had trouble finding space behind the Palace back-four and scored their only marker from the penalty spot. Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jermain Defoe both had clear chances to put the game away but neither man did the job. Things could be tough going forward minus a finisher like Bale. 5. Liverpool (1-0 win over Stoke City) Highest ranking: 4 Lowest ranking: 6 A dominant performance against Stoke City in their first game almost turned into a heartbreaking draw, but thanks to goalkeeper Simon Mignolet a late penalty did not crash the party. Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal for Liverpool who despite not getting the goal to ice the game, looked very solid picking up their first victory of the season. 6. West Ham United (2-0 win over Cardiff City) Highest ranking: 5 Lowest ranking: 10 Joe Cole and Kevin Nolan ensured a happy opening day for the Hammers and their supporters. With a goal in the first 13 minutes, West Ham was able to take control of the contest and though they didnt score the put away goal until the 76th, were never really in danger of dropping the opening contest. 7. Aston Villa (3-1 win over Arsenal, 2-1 loss to Chelsea) Highest ranking: 6 Lowest ranking: 10 Lost in all of the conversation about how bad Arsenal was in defeat is that Aston Villa dominated their 3-1 opening victory. Christian Benteke benefitted from two chances at the penalty spot, he converted one outright and followed up and buried the rebound on the other. A controversial Arsenal red card also handed Aston Villa an advantage in man power which they eventually turned into the third goal of the game. Villa lost their second game, a midweek contest to Chelsea, where they were once again better than expected. 8. Southampton (1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion) Highest ranking: 5 Lowest ranking: 12 Rickie Lambert converted from the penalty spot to send his team to a deserved opening victory over West Brom. Before the winner was scored, Southampton controlled the majority of the play and looked close to scoring a few times before finally earning the penalty that won the game. 9. Everton (2-2 draw with Norwich City) Highest ranking: 7 Lowest ranking: 11 Roberto Martinez new side looked great in an offensive showdown with Norwich City that ended in a 2-2 draw. Ross Barkley and Seamus Coleman scored for Everton in four minute stretch and looked to have secured a 2-1 victory. Steven Pienaar, Nikica Jelavic and Marouane Fellaini all looked great for the Toffees, which bodes well as long as all of those players are still with Everton at the end of the transfer window. 10. Fulham (1-0 win over Sunderland) Highest ranking: 8 Lowest ranking: 13 The Cottagers had one chance to steal a 1-0 victory from Sunderland. In the 52nd minute, Pajtim Kasami nodded home a Damien Duff corner and Fulham hung on for the points. Defender Kieran Richardson left in the 19th minute with an injury which would be a massive blow if he was hurt long term. It wasnt a great performance but a victory, which is more important. 11. Norwich City (2-2 draw with Everton) Highest ranking: 9 Lowest ranking: 12 After splashing a team record amount for Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Norwich watched their new man pay off with the game tying goal in a 2-2 draw with Everton. Opening goal notwithstanding, van Wolfswinkel was a major part of Norwichs offensive chances throughout the game. They should be happy with the point in their opening contest. 12. Stoke City (1-0 loss to Liverpool) Highest ranking: 11 Lowest ranking: 17 Mark Hughes new side is trying to play a more open and less physical style of play than has become the reputation of Stoke sides in the past. Though they failed to score, they also kept a very game Liverpool side from opening them up and had a chance to at least earn a draw on a penalty at the death. Keeper Asmir Begovic was solid for the Potters as he usually is when called into action. 13. West Bromwich Albion (1-0 loss to Southampton) Highest ranking: 13 Lowest ranking: 14 Sometimes the difference between success and struggle is conceding a 90th minute penalty; such was the case for West Brom in the opener. For almost the entire game it looked as though they were going to escape with a point in a game where they were outplayed. Unfortunately Youssouf Mulumbu committed a foul in the area, leading to a penalty and the only goal in a 1-0 loss to Southampton. They were that close. 14. Swansea City (4-1 loss to Manchester United) Highest ranking: 12 Lowest ranking: 16 The Swans looked ready to run with the Champs for the first 20 minutes of their match, before Robin van Persie opened the flood gates in a 4-1 defeat. New signing Wilfried Bony came on at halftime and eventually netted a consolation marker for Swansea in the 81st minute, but it was way too late to save Michael Laudrups side from an opening defeat. Swansea needs to improve in the final third of the field. 15. Arsenal (3-1 loss to Aston Villa) Highest ranking: 11 Lowest ranking: 19 Two penalties conceded, one red card committed and no real fire shown either offensively or defensively, would sum up how poorly the opening match went for the Gunners. Though some of the calls could be in question, there is no question that Aston Villa controlled everything in the 3-1 loss. The only amazing thing about the match is that six minutes in, Arsenal took the lead. The hope that goal created quickly dissipated into a rough opening day loss. 16. Sunderland (1-0 loss to Fulham) Highest ranking: 15 Lowest ranking: 17 Many chances fell by the wayside for Sunderland in their opening 1-0 loss against Fulham. Jozy Altidore had multiple chances in on goal and Cabral was impressive, but neither could find the finish. Ji Dong-Won also had a late chance to even the score but headed the ball wide just as the clock ticked past the 90 minute mark. Paolo Di Canios summer remodel looks after one game like it needs just a little fine tuning. 17. Crystal Palace (1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur) Highest ranking: 13 Lowest ranking: 18 It is a credit to keeper Julian Speroni and the Crystal Palace back-four that they only fell 1-0 to Tottenham. Speroni especially was forced into action numerous times and was only beaten by Roberto Soldado from the penalty spot. It is an encouraging start for a newly promoted side that will have to learn to keep their defensive shape while still pushing the ball forward. 18. Newcastle United (4-0 loss to Manchester City) Highest ranking: 16 Lowest ranking: 20 There are many that think Alan Pardew is already on the clock heading towards being the first manager fired this season, an opening 4-0 loss to Manchester City isnt going to help. His team never looked like winning in the opening match and Steven Taylor was sent off late in the first half compounding the problem. This was as bad a start to the season as possible for Newcastle, who had to fight hard to avoid relegation last season. 19. Hull City (2-0 loss to Chelsea) Highest ranking: 16 Lowest ranking: 20 A few scattered chances were produced by Hull in their opener but for the most part they were overrun by Chelsea in a 2-0 defeat. Keeper Allan McGregor turned away a sixth minute penalty from Chelsea, which is probably the high point of the game for the Tigers. 20. Cardiff City (2-0 loss to West Ham United) Highest ranking: 18 Lowest ranking: 19 It was a rough debut in the Premier League for Cardiff, as they were defeated 2-0 by West Ham. Nicky Maynard had the best look at goal for Cardiff but was not able to finish the chance that would have created a furious finish. Though they gave up a goal early in the first half and late in the second, the side from Wales did look decent, especially in defence in the interim. Chris Heisey connected for his first grand slam and Devin Mesoraco homered and drove in a career high-tying four runs as Cincinnati took advantage of Tampa Bays depleted pitching staff for a 12-4 victory on Sunday.NEW YORK, N.Y. - Josh Satin and the New York Mets were determined not to lose another long game at Citi Field, especially one that had pushed past 5 hours. No worries. The suddenly smooth-swinging Satin and rookie Andrew Brown took care of it. Brown hit a two-run single with two outs in the 13th inning and the Mets put together a pair of late rallies to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 on Monday night, handing the NL West leaders their fourth straight loss. "Walking a team off at the end — theres no greater feeling," Satin said after his second three-hit game in a row. Satin tied it with an RBI single in the ninth off Arizona closer J.J. Putz, his first save opportunity since the ex-Met went on the disabled list May 8. Cody Ross led off the 13th with a homer against David Aardsma (1-0), but the Mets fought back again against the Diamondbacks bullpen. Satin doubled with one out off Josh Collmenter (4-1) and John Buck was intentionally walked, putting the potential winning run on base. Mets pitcher Matt Harvey pinch hit for Aardsma and sacrificed the runners over. After Omar Quintanilla was also intentionally walked, Brown lined an 0-2 pitch into left-centre and was mobbed by teammates near first base well after midnight. Collmenter slammed his glove to the ground and then yelled in frustration as he walked off the field. "Give those guys credit for coming back," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "Its a tough loss." Arizona right fielder Gerardo Parra was injured in the eighth when he hit his face hard on the warning track trying to make a diving catch on Quintanillas triple. The Diamondbacks said a Mets team doctor ruled out a concussion for Parra, a 2011 Gold Glove winner. Wearing black armbands on their jerseys to honour the 19 firefighters who died Sunday in a wildfire about 80 miles northwest of Phoenix, the Diamondbacks fell to 2-5 on a 10-game road trip against the NL East. The Mets won for the fourth time in 12 home games, needing 5 hours, 13 minutes to secure it. "If youre going to be out there that long you might as well win the game," manager Terry Collins said. "We were out of pitching, I can tell you that." The Diamondbacks appeared poised to snap a three-game skid and end a long drought of winless starts by their starters at 23 games (0-10), opening an early 3-0 lead behind Paul Goldschmidts two-run homer, his 20th, and Aaron Hills RBI single in the second off Shaun Marcum. "I thought that was going to be the one that sort of got us going as far as getting our starters a win," Ross said. The bullpen spoiled it. New York tied it in the ninth against Putz. Marlonn Byrd hit a double off the very top of the wall — a call upheld by replay review — and Satin drove him in with a single. John Matuszak Jersey. New York had an opportunity to win it there but Buck was thrown out trying to advance to second base on a wild pitch that moved Satin to third, ending the inning. Putz said he felt fine, it was just poor execution against Byrd. "I just didnt finish the pitch," Putz said of the split-fingered fastball that he wanted to bounce in the dirt. Satin was called up when buddy Ike Davis was sent to Triple-A Las Vegas in a deep funk, and the 28-year-old first baseman with just 64 major league at-bats has been the teams hottest hitter the past week. Hes batting .444 (12 for 27) in the last seven games, and earning more playing time. "Josh deserves some at-bats. Hes getting some big hits. It doesnt matter if theyre left-handed or right-handed. Hes getting big hits for us," Collins said. "Ill tell you what: Every team has somebody that surprises you and saves you. And right now, hes our saviour cause this guy has come up and filled a big hole for us." The Mets started their comeback after Wade Miley was lifted following 5 2-3 innings of shutout ball. He was the last Diamondbacks starter to win — on June 5. David Wright had an RBI single off Brad Ziegler in the seventh and Eric Young Jr. a run-scoring double off David Hernandez after a 10-minute delay when Parra got hurt. Parra was able to walk off the field without assistance after being examined by a Diamondbacks trainer and two EMTs right in front of the Arizona bullpen. Quintanilla scored on Youngs two-out double to make it 3-2. Goldschmidt, who was 1 for 9 during a three-game weekend sweep in Atlanta, gave Miley a quick cushion. He hit a 2-1 pitch from Marcum after Hill was hit by a pitch with one out in the first. Hill added an RBI single in the second before Marcum settled in for six innings. Then five Mets relievers shut down Arizona, giving up just four hits until Ross homer. NOTES: The Mets and Diamondbacks each hung a jersey in their dugouts bearing the name "Yarnell" — the locale of the fire — and the No. 19. Those jerseys were shown on the scoreboard at Citi Field during a moment of silence before the national anthem. ... Mets SS Ruben Tejada (strained quadriceps) played his third game for the Gulf Coast League Mets and went 2 for 4 with an RBI while playing all nine innings. MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay - Soccer-crazy Uruguayans raged Thursday at FIFAs decision to kick their star player out of the World Cup for his third biting incident, fearing it could deal a death blow to their bid to win the sports greatest tournament. Wholesale Lions Jerseys . Uruguays soccer federation said it planned to appeal the ban, which prohibits striker Luis Suarez from all soccer activities for four months. The ban also covers Uruguays next nine international games, which rules him out of next years Copa America. It will likely carry over to qualifying matches for the 2018 World Cup. Uruguayans of all stripes were nearly unanimous in their support of Suarez, calling the punishment excessive for what they felt was an act of immaturity. "It feels like Uruguay has been thrown out of the World Cup," Uruguayan soccer federation president Wilmar Valdez said in Rio. Diego Suarez, the strikers youngest brother who is also a soccer player, called the sanction an "unbelievable" decision that has saddened him. Juan Jose Monzillo, a fruit and vegetable vendor in Uruguays capital of Montevideo, saw conspiracy behind the decision by soccers governing body. "They clearly wanted to kick Suarez out of the World Cup. Uruguay is a small country that eliminated two big nations like Italy and England and it doesnt benefit FIFA to let Uruguay continue playing," said Monzillo, 48, who listened to the news about Suarez on headphones as he tended his stand. A crowd of fans, including President Jose Mujica at one point, gathered at Montevideos international airport Thursday night expecting Suarez to fly home. But the Uruguayan Football Federation later announced that Suarez was still in Brazil, adding that he thanked the fans but giving no explanation for why he had not left for home. Suarez bit the shoulder of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguays 1-0 win in the group stage on Tuesday, but escaped unpunished in the game itself as the referee did not see the incident. "Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup, when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field," Claudio Sulser, chairman of the FIFA disciplinary committee, said in a statement. But Uruguayans did not buy the explanation. "The immorality and hypocrisy of FIFA has no limits. Neither does Chiellinis inclination for being a tattle-tale and a fink!" Luis Puig, a lawmaker for Uruguays ruling Broad Front coalition said on his Twitter account. This is the third time Suarez has been banned for biting an opponent, following similar incidents with Ajax in the Dutch league and Liverpool. He was given a 10-match ban by the Premier League for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in April 2013. Besides the biting incidents, Suarez has been vilified for racially abusing an opposing player and for a handball on the goal-line during an earlier World Cup quarterfinal. He also has been accused of having a penchant for diving. But Suarez also stuns fans with moments of brilliance on the field, leaving some to compare him to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The Uruguayan striker for Liverpool was last seasons player of the year in Englands Premier League. Valdez, the head of Uruguays soccer federation, said that it was Suarez who was targeted for aggression by the Italians. "When he falls, several substitutes insult him on the ground and some members of Italys staff even came off the bench to try to hit him," Valdez said, suggesting FIFA should investigate Italy. Any appeal by Uruguay must first go to the FIFA appeal committee, said FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer. If rejected, Suarez and Uruguay could take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland. "We should withdraw from the World Cup, because what they have done is so lamentable. But at least we can go forward with dignity," said former soccer player Robert Lima, who won several Uruguayan championship with the club Penarol. T.J. Hockenson Jersey .K. Cleveland has won the first two of this set and has won six straight games since losing back-to-back tilts to open the year. Seattle, on the other hand, has now lost six in a row following consecutive wins to kick off its campaign.SAINT JOHN, N.B. -- The skips voice rasped and there was fatigue in her face. Rachel Homan and her Ottawa Curling Club team were ready to put their feet up for an evening and a morning at the Ford World Womens Curling Championship after three straight wins, one of them a white-knuckler. "Oh my god, so ready. I cant wait to not curl for 24 hours," Homan said Wednesday. "I feel like its midnight, so it will be nice to get a break." The Canadians arrived at a break in the schedule tied atop the standings with Switzerlands Binia Feltscher at 8-1. The Canadians reverted to their custom of both taking the lead and finishing a game early in a 10-3 win over South Koreas Ji-sun Kim, who shook hands after eight ends. But Canada went the distance in the morning draw. They stole three points over the final two ends to rescue a 7-5 win over Germanys Imogen Oona Lehmann. That was the first time Homan threw her final stone at the world championship and just the second time Canada played a 10th end in Saint John. Theyd beaten Scotland the previous evening and were back on the Harbour Station ice in the morning. "It was a long haul, three games in a row on not much sleep and a big grind this morning against Germany," Homan said. Homan, third Emma Miskew, second Alison Kreviazuk and lead Lisa Weagle headed to dinner with family members feeling confident about their position. Canada concludes the round robin Thursday against China and Sweden. "Two great teams," Miskew said. Swedens Margaretha Sigfridsson and Russias Anna Sidorova were both 7-2 followed by Chinas Liu Sijia and South Korea tied at 6-3 and Allison Pottinger of the U.S. at 5-4. Scotlands Kerry Barr and Anna Kubeskova of the Czech Republic were 2-7 with Germany, Latvias Evita Regza and Denmarks Madeleine Dupont at 1-8. The top four teams in the preliminary round advance to the Page playoff. Ties for fourth will be solved by tie-breaker games. The countries with the two best records meet in one playoff game Friday with the winner advancing directly to Sundays gold-medal game. The loser drops to Saturday afternoons semifinal to meet the winner of a morning playoff between the third and fourth seeds. "We have our fate in our own hands," Homan said. "Weve got to win out and see what happens with everybody else." The Canadians, all 28 years old or younger, couldnt hide their pleasure at the prospect of sleepiing in Thursday morning. Jahlani Tavai Jersey. They intended to stop in at the tournament party room before bed Wednesday "because theres a band there Signal Hill that we like," Miskew said. "Theyve come to Ottawa and we usually go and watch them in Ottawa." Canada scored three points in the fourth and stole three in the eighth versus South Korea. Pyeongchang, South Korea, is the host city of the 2018 Winter Olympics. Kim is among the countrys female curlers getting fast-tracked to compete. The 26-year-old skipped South Korea to fourth at the 2012 world championship in Lethbridge, Alta. She beat Canadas Heather Nedohin in a playoff game, but lost the semifinal and lost the bronze-medal rematch to Nedohin. Kim threw third stones against Homan with Un-chi Gim, her lead in Lethbridge, throwing fourth stones. With the score tied 2-2, the South Koreans played conservatively in the fourth end by putting up guards early on a counter on the button. But Miskews well-executed draw around a guard forced them to chase. South Koreas poorly-placed draws opened the door for Canada to plant more counters around the button. Homan had an easy tap for three points and a 5-2 lead in front of 1,726 at Harbour Station. "Not good," Kim said. "We were a little nervous." Canada recovered from errors against Germany to grind out a win. The Germans led 5-4 heading into the ninth, when Homan and Lehmann shifted momentum back and forth with misses. Lehmann overthrew an attempted double takeout with hammer to leave Canada shot rock for a steal of one. Miskew put guards in front of a Kreviazuk draw to the button in 10th and German third Corinna Scholz missed an attempted hit and roll behind cover. Homan struggled with draws in the earlier ends, but she had it solved by the 10th as she drew in to stack two Canadian counters on the button. Lehmann cleared just one and Homan buried a draw behind a guard to lie two again. The German skips attempt to follow her didnt curl enough. "Youve got to be confident and believe you can steal because theres no other way, theres no other option," Homan said. "It was just tough out there. We werent quite reading things right. There were a lot of uncharacteristic misses. We just tried to figure out our rocks and our lines. We just had to keep playing a little bit better each end and hope for a few lucky breaks and we made it out in the end." CHICAGO -- Jeremy Guthrie was pleased with the way he was pitching over the previous two months. Cheap Tampa Bay Buccaneers Gear . He just didnt have anything to show for it. He wasnt happy with much of his performance Friday night, but it was good enough to snap an 11-game winless streak. Lorenzo Cain had a two-run double to highlight a five-run first inning, Guthrie pitched into the sixth inning and the Kansas City Royals extended their winning streak to five games with a 7-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. "Baseball is a very funny game," Guthrie said. "This is a very ironic way to pick up a win after a long stretch -- not pitch very well, not pitch too deep in the game, but do enough to help the team win." Guthrie (3-6) allowed two runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings. Before Friday, he had gone at least seven innings in four of his last five games. His last win was on April 9, against Tampa Bay. "This is probably the worst game hes had in this streak," Royals manager Ned Yost said. The right-hander had pitched well enough to win on several occasions, but received the lowest run support in the AL (2.59) during that span. That wasnt an issue Friday. Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler each had two RBIs, including a run-scoring single in the first inning, for Kansas City. Jose Quintana (3-7) never recovered from the slow start, allowing six runs and eight hits in six innings. Jose Abreu went 1 for 4 with an RBI for the White Sox. The Royals staked Guthrie to a five-run lead before he took the mound. The first four batters -- Nori Aoki, Omar Infante, Hosmer and Butler -- all singled to make it 2-0 and fifth-place hitter Alex Gordon followed with a double to right field to make it 3-0. After Quintana struck out Salvador Perez for the first out of the game, Cain stroked a double to left to drive in two more and made it 5-0. "In the past Qs always been a little slow coming out of the first inning," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "But they were swinging it. They barrelled him up and it happened fast." The White Sox got a run back in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Abreu. The Royals got it back in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Hosmer. Chicago loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the inning as Alexei Ramirez and Dayan Viciedo singled and Alejandro De Aza walked, but the White Sox pushed across just one run -- on a walk to Adam Eaton -- to make it 6-2. "I didnt come out aggressive enough," Guthrie said. "A couple of walks and I loaded the bases in the second. I was very fortunate to get out of the first two innings with just a couple of runs and then I was able to settle down down the stretch." Guthrie struck out Tyler Flowers with no outs and then struck out Gordon Beckham with one out following the walk to Eaton. Conor Gillaspie then flied out to centre to end the inning. The starters then settled down and neither team scored over the next four innings. "He was at 74 pitches through three and I was like, OK, if you can just get us through five with the lead, thats going to be a heck of a job," Brewers manager Ned Yost said of Guthrie. "He ended up throwing 14 pitches in the fourth inning, six pitches in the fifth and got two outs in the sixth." Kansas City added a run in the seventh on Hosmers run-scoring single to make it 7-2. NOTES: Royals SS Alcides Escobar left the game in the eighth inning with a cramp in the left calf. "If he feels tightness tomorrow, well probably give him the day off," Yost said. .The White Sox have signed RHP Henry Rodriguez to a minor league contract. Rodriguez, released by Miami earlier this season, has been assigned to Triple-A Charlotte and will begin on the DL. ... The last time LHP Chris Sale had a high pitch count he landed on the DL for a month, but Ventura had no problems with the Chicago ace throwing 116 on Thursday. "He felt great going there and he didnt have that inning where he really had to fight through it and battle," Ventura said. ... LHP Danny Duffy (3-5) takes on RHP Hector Noesi (2-4) in the second game of the series Saturday. Vancouver Canucks trade Cam Neely & 1st Round Pick to Boston Bruins for Barry Pederson (1986)Few remember that Neely, the original power forward, spent the first three years of his career with the Canucks. Vancouver gave up on the local product after he put up 104 points in his first three years in the league in an attempt to add some more goal scoring and defensive responsibility to the lineup. Neely exploded on to the scene in Beantown with 72 points and 143 PIMs in his first season while Pederson struggled to regain his scoring touch on the left coast. The cherry on top? The first round pick that the Canucks added to the deal turned into Glen Wesley, who patrolled the Bruins blue line for seven solid seasons at the outset of his two decades in the league. 9. New York Islanders trade Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckalt and a first-round draft choice to the Ottawa Senators for Alexei Yashin (2001)The Islanders have made a few deals over the years that have left their thriving fan base dumfounded, and this one belongs near the top of the list. After sitting out an entire season, Yashin was looking to get paid and the Islanders were willing to open the checkbook. This deal was seemingly reasonable at the time, as Yashin was one of the games better players at the time and Chara had yet to develop into a menace. But Yashin fell off the cliff on the Island, the pick turned into Jason Spezza and we all know what Chara is now. 8. Boston Bruins trade Joe Thornton to the San Jose Sharks for Marco Sturm, Wayne Primeau & Brad Stuart (2005)In a bit revisionist history, imagine where the Bruins would be if they had never dealt Jumbo Joe. Would they have won the Cup? More than one? Despite failing to get anything resembling a top six player in return for a Hart Trophy winner, the Bruins saved themselves the money that Joe was asking for, and put together one of the model franchises of the league. Depth is often overlooked, as the players stuffing the box scores receive the credit while the sandpaper playing a dozen minutes a night is considered interchangeable and insignificant. The three players that the Bruins got back in this deal were these type of players, who while valuable were often forgotten. However, Joe scored seventy plus points in in seven straight seasons for the Sharks, so no amount of depth can make up for the impact that he has had in San Jose. 7. New York Islanders trade Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen to the Florida Panthers for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha (2000)Mike Milbury strikes again. After taking Luongo 4th overall in 97, he decided to take Rick DiPietro 1st overall in 2000. So obviously he decided to ship Bobby Loo to the Sunshine State. Ironically Jokinen was taken one pick before Luongo in 97, and ended up playing for three different teams in his first three full seasons in the league. This quote from the 2000 draft will go down as one of the more misguided statements in recent history. "Were rolling the dice here a little bit," Milbury said, grinning as if to acknowledge his understatement. "Luongo is going to be an excellent goaltender in this league for a lot of years. But in our minds, we feel DiPietro possesses an element Roberto didnt have." You certainly cant knock Milbury for trying to be bold, and there was no way of knowing that DiPietro would suffer so many injuries that would derail his career, but this move will go down as the feather in Milburys cap. 6. Toronto Maple Leafs trade Tuukka Rask to the Boston Bruins for Andrew Raycroft (2006)The reign of John Ferguson Jr. at the helm of the Leafs was far from glorious, and his decision to trade Rask was especially ugly. The Leafs had both Justin Pogge and Rask coming up in the ranks, and an aging Eddie Belfour on the roster who was in need of some insulation. The decision to ship Rask out instead of Pogge is one that forever marred JFJs track record. Raycroft won the Calder with the Bruins in 03-04, and after playing in the Swedish Elite League during the lockout, made his way to Toronto where expectations were high for the Belleville, Ontario native. There was dreams of Raycroft and Pogge teaming up to form a formidable goaltending tandem for the Leafs, but neither player was able to find their way in the league. Raycroft had one solid season for the blue and white, but failed to find any consistency throughout his career. Rask was just a pup when he was dealt to the Bs, but after developing in Providence for a couple of seasons, the Fin has established himself as one of the best goalies in the game. One can only imagine where the Leafs would be if this deal had never materiialized 5. Custom Buccaneers Jerseys. Montreal Canadiens trade Patrick Roy and Mike Keane to the Colorado Avalanche for Andrei Kovalenko, Martin Rucinsky and Jocelyn Thibault (1995)We all remember the scene of Roy storming off the ice and whispering into Habs president Ronald Coreys ear. Several days later, he was dealt to the Avs in a move that Canadiens fans still shake their head at. Was it a panic move by the Habs? It sure looks like it in retrospect. The Canadiens thought that they were getting a goalie that would be able to develop into a capable replacement in Thibault, but he was never able a consistent game. All the while Roy won another two Cups in Colorado, and will go down as one of the best goalies of all time. Kovalenko and Rucinsky were capable players, but were never able to find enough success with the Habs to come close to justifying the deal. 4. Edmonton Oilers trade Mark Messier and Jeff Beukeboom to New York Rangers for Bernie Nicholls, David Shaw, Steven Rice and Louie DeBrusk (1991)While many point to that fateful day in 88 as the one that defined The Boys on the Bus, it can be said that dealing the Moose was the one that officially ended the dynasty of the copper and blue. However, many forget that the circumstance surrounding the departure of Gretzky and Messier from Edmonton differ greatly. While The Great One was sold by owner Peter Pocklington, Messier and his agent (his father Doug) demanded a trade when contract demands werent met. It is often difficult to leverage adequate value when a player publicly demands a trade, but Oilers GM Glen Sather fell short of even getting players that could stay on the ice for the Oilers. Messier of course went on to lift Lord Stanley for the Rangers, while the Oilers havent won a ring since he left. 3. Florida Panthers trade Roberto Luongo, Lukas Krajicek and a sixth-round pick (Sergei Shirokov) to the Vancouver Canucks for Alex Auld, Bryan Allen and Todd Bertuzzi (2006)One player appearing on the same list twice? And by the time the week is done he could make it a trifecta. Apparently GMs around the league are eager to try to formulate deals to ship Luongo around the league, but he who deals him continues to get hosed on the return. Bertuzzi certainly had his time as a high-end player for Vancouver skating alongside Marcus Naslund, but getting a franchise goalie for the better part of a decade was worth more than him and some spare parts. 2. Philadelphia Flyers trade Peter Forsberg, Steve Duchesne, Mike Ricci, Kerry Huffman, Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, two first-round selections (Jocelyn Thibault and Nolan Baumgartner) and cash ($15 million) to Quebec for Eric Lindros (1992) Lindros was a man among boys coming out of junior, but he came along with some heavy baggage. He made it known that he didnt want to play for the Nords, and ended up sitting out his rookie season waiting for a deal. A year later the Nords shipped him to Philly and in return got a bounty that armchair GMs would have a tough time wrapping their heads around. While Lindros burst onto the scene and established himself as one of the best players in the game, the price that was paid for the man-child is still hard to justify. Forsberg established himself as one of the leagues most dynamic forwards, Hextall eventually found his way back to Philly - but he was an established tender that played another seven seasons after the deal. Add in a half dozen role players plus a cool $15 million, and it is hard to justify this deal despite the level of dominance that Lindros displayed during his time in the league. 1. Edmonton Oilers trade Wayne Gretzky, Marty McSorley and Mike Krushenlnyski to the Los Angeles Kings for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, three 1st round picks and $15 million (1988) On so many levels, incomprehensible. Not only because of his status as the greatest player of all time, and not only because it was the end of one of the greatest dynasties the game had ever seen. Deals like this are quite simply not possible in todays league and therefore that much more difficult to wrap your head around. The economic condition that the league is flush with now makes it easy to forget the days when southern expansion was fresh and you could quite simply cut checks for players akin to European footy. It doesnt even matter that the Oilers could have ended up in decent shape had Jimmy Carson kept up his torrid scoring pace or that Glen Sather had next to no part in the negotiations of the best player of all time. The trade was hardly that, but more of a transfer of assets. It shocked the sporting world in a way that cannot be replicated. SAN FRANCISCO -- Hunter Pence followed his first long-term contract with his first game-ending hit with San Francisco. Custom Packers Jerseys . Pence singled in the winning run with no outs in the ninth inning to give the Giants a 7-6 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday. "Honestly, they showed faith in me by giving me the contract and that lifted my spirits," said Pence, who formally signed a five-year with the club earlier in the day. "I wanted to show them why they should believe in me." Pences last walk-off hit came with the Philadelphia Phillies on May 15, 2012. "This game was a great way to go into the off-season," Pence said. "We have a team that battles and is scrappy. The last three weeks weve been playing that way and that gives us momentum heading into off-season." Francisco Peguero hit his first career home run leading off the ninth to tie it as Huston Street (2-5) blew his second save in 35 chances. "Thats a tough one, whether its April, May, June or . . . September," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Huston has been so reliable for us the past couple of years and it just goes to show that players are not invincible." Tony Abreu followed with a single and advance to second on Streets wild pitch. Brandon Belt walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball. After Buster Posey was intentionally walked, Pence, who had three RBIs, singled to centre to end the game. "You couldnt ask for a better story today with everything that happened," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "It felt like a playoff game. I guess the guys really wanted a piece of third place." Sergio Romo (5-8) pitched the ninth for the win as the Giants finished in a third place tie with the Padres, 16 games behind the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Jedd Gyorko hit a grand slam and Nick Hundley homered for the Padres. Gyorkos slam put an exclamation point on a sensational rookie season. He became the first rookie second baseman to lead his team in RBIs. His 23 homers are the third most by a rookie second baseman ever. "Hes had a fabulous year, no doubt about it," Black said. "The power numbers, the defence and you add the time he missed where he could have added to those numbers. He had a good rookie season, theres no doubt about that." Tyson Ross pitched six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out seven. He was 0-4 in his previous eight starts. Belt drove in two runs for the Giants, who lost their second straight. Pablo Sandoval also drove in a run. It also broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth. Walks to Alexi Amarista and Jesus Guzman sandwiched around Chris Denorfias single loaded the bases ahead of Gyorko, who was the first hitter faced by Giants reliever Kyle Dunning. Hundley led off the third with his 13th home run, a career high. Tommy Medica doubled home a run in the fourth. Barry Zito entered the game for one batter in the eighth, striking out Mark Kotsay in what was likely his last appearance in a Giants uniform. He received a standing ovation and acknowledged it with a wave of his cap to the entire stadium. "That was a special moment," Pence said. "He was in a zone and went to get the one out. It was powerful." Gregor Blanco left the game with two outs in the ninth with an apparent right knee injury. He collided with Angel Pagan while trying to make a play on Will Venables pinch hit triple. NOTES: The Giants end the season with a streak of 246 regular-season sellouts. ...
