SAN DIEGO -- There is something about the Padres and playing them in San Diego that agrees with Hyun-Jin Ryu and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ryu threw six strong innings and the Dodgers beat the Padres 2-1 Sunday soon after San Diegos general manager Josh Byrnes was fired. Ryu (9-3) had few problems against the light-hitting Padres, as he won for the sixth time in seven starts since missing more than three weeks with shoulder inflammation. "I try to be aggressive in every ballpark that I pitch in," Ryu said through a translator. "Today, I think the main thing was ball control. I was able to keep the ball down early and that was the story." The Dodgers, winners of 10 of 14, took two of three games in the series and have either won or split their last 11 series in San Diego. The last time they lost a series in San Diego was a three-game sweep in September 2010. "It felt good to get this series," Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly said. "We got a couple of runs early and youd like to keep tacking on. Hyun-Jin was throwing the ball good and our bullpen did a nice job to held on for the series." The left-handed Ryu gave up one runs and four hits, and he did not allow San Diego to get its first hit until the fourth inning. "He got off to a good start," said Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis. "He kept them off balance the first time through the lineup. They made some good adjustments, made him throw more in the middle innings." In three career starts against the Padres, Ryu has allowed only two earned runs in 19 1-3 innings. Byrnes had been San Diegos GM since October 2011. The Padres went 76-86 in his first two seasons and are 32-44 and 13 1/2 games back in the NL West this season. Adrian Gonzalez and Dee Gordon drove in runs against Eric Stults (2-10). J.P. Howell pitched 1 1-3 perfect innings and Brian Wilson got two outs before Kenley Jansen finished off the four-hitter by pitching the ninth for his 22nd save in 25 chances. Hanley Ramirez got the Dodgers going in the first with a one-out single. He stole a base and took third on a wild pitch when Stults walked Yasiel Puig. Ramirez scored on Gonzalezs ground out. Ryu helped himself in the second when his sacrifice bunt advanced Scott Van Slyke and Ellis. Gordon drove in Van Slyke with an RBI single to right but Ellis was thrown out at home by right fielder Chris Denorfia. Denorfia had two hits off Ryu, including a leadoff double in the sixth. After a groundout advanced him to third, Denorfia scored on Carlos Quentins groundout. Mattingly decided to pull Ryu after the sixth because he sensed his starter was getting tired. "I would like to go deeper in the game but toward the end, I felt a little bit extra more fatigue," Ryu said. "After talking to Donnie about it, he made the call." Said Ellis: "It was typical Hyun-Jin. He gave us a chance to win the game. He makes big pitches when he has to. He comes to win." Stults rebounded from a string of six straight subpar starts as he allowed two runs on six hits in a season-high seven innings. He struck out five and walked three. It was just the second time in 24 starts that the lefty has walked more than two batters. "Location was better," Stults said. "I was able to limit the mistakes and was just able to kind of keep them off balance." Stults has lost seven consecutive decisions over eight starts. The last time he won was a 6-2 victory over Miami on May 10. NOTES: Dodgers LF Matt Kemp extended his hitting streak to 10 games, while Ramirez increased his to nine games. ... Kiko Alonso Jersey . In Europe, top teams seem to be largely happy with their squads after spending nearly $1 billion in the off-season. And although English league clubs are unlikely to splash cash in January, Arsenal and Chelsea could be tempted to strengthen their squads with new strikers. LIVERPOOL, England -- Diego Costa kept up the prolific start to his Chelsea career on Saturday, setting the title favourites on their way to a 2-0 win over Leicester and a second straight victory to open the Premier League. The Spain striker scored on his Chelsea debut in a 3-1 win over Burnley on Monday and was back in the goals five days later, breaking down Leicesters stubborn resistance at Stamford Bridge in the 63rd minute. Belgium winger Eden Hazards solo effort in the 77th ensured Chelsea has maximum points after two games against teams promoted from the second-tier League Championship. Swansea is the only other side with back-to-back wins after beating Burnley 1-0, while Arsenal has four points after scoring twice in the final seven minutes through Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud to recover for a 2-2 draw at Everton. West Ham won 3-1 at managerless Crystal Palace while the games between Aston Villa-Newcastle and Southampton-West Bromwich Albion finished 0-0. Didier Drogba was given a standing ovation from the Chelsea fans when he came on as a second-half substitute for his first home match in his second spell with the London club. But the Stamford Bridge fans have a new goalscoring star in Costa. Signed for 32 million pounds ($53 million) from Atletico Madrid in the off-season, Costa is proving exactly the kind of ruthless finisher Chelsea was lacking last season as it came up short in the title race. "I got the feeling in preseason that his adaptation would not be a big deal, he is an easy guy," Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said. "His style of play has adapted to our needs, so it has not been a problem." Costas goal came after Oscar played in Branislav Ivanovic on the right side of the area, and the right backs cutback was chested down by Costa and drilled past Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel from six yards. Midfielder Cesc Fabregas and gooalkeeper Thibaut Courtois are other arrivals at Chelsea this summer and played key roles in a hard-fought win against last seasons second-tier champions.dddddddddddd Courtois -- back at Chelsea after his loan spell at Atletico -- again started ahead of Petr Cech and his save from David Nugent when the striker was through on goal in the 55th minute was crucial. "I dont forget they had a good chance with the result 0-0," Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said, "but we had so many chances, so many opportunities to score obviously we deserved the victory." Fabregas had two assists in a man-of-the-match display against Burnley and he set up Hazard for the second goal against Leicester, with the winger collecting the ball on the left, cutting inside and drilling a low shot past Schmeichel into the corner. "I thought we played exceptionally well in the first half but its about taking your chances when you get them," Leicester manager Nigel Pearson said. "There are more positives today than there are negatives." Giroud, a halftime substitute, headed home with 40 seconds left of normal time to grab a point for Arsenal at Goodison Park, with Ramseys close-range goal starting the visitors fightback in the 83rd. Goals by Seamus Coleman and Steven Naismith put Everton comfortably in front at halftime. "We had a big test today and at halftime it was even a bigger test," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "We responded well." West Ham increased the early-season misery for Palace, which conceded a late goal to lose to Arsenal last weekend and is still without a manager following Tony Pulis resignation two days before the start of the season Goals by Argentine striker Mauro Zarate -- on his debut -- Stewart Downing and Carlton Cole secured West Hams first points of the season after losing 1-0 to Tottenham first time out.
