NAPLES, Fla. -- Natalie Gulbis got off to a rocky start and put herself in position for a great finish. That describes her year as much as her third round Saturday in the LPGA Titleholders. Gulbis hooked a 5-iron into the water and made bogey on the par-5 opening hole, and then bounced back for a 7-under 65. That gave Gulbis a share of the lead with Gerina Piller and Pornanong Phatlum of Thailand. They each had a 67. The leaders were at 11-under 205, though it was far from a three-player race for the richest prize in womens golf. Stacy Lewis virtually wrapped up the Vare Trophy with a tournament-record 63, and now has a chance to do so much more. Lewis was two shots behind, along with Shanshan Feng of China (67), Lexi Thompson (67) and 36-hole leader Sandra Gal, whose 74 let so many players back into contention. Michelle Wie, on the one-year anniversary of her peculiar putting stroke, had a 66 and was among three shots behind. A dozen players were separated by four shots going into the final round of the season at Tiburon Golf Club, where the winner gets $700,000 from the $2 million purse. That most likely wont be 16-year-old Lydia Ko, who had a 72 and was nine shots behind in her pro debut. Gulbis hasnt won a tournament since 2007, and it looked unlikely for this year to end that drought. She became ill at her first tournament of the year in Thailand and later was diagnosed with malaria. Gulbis was told to rest for two months, take "medicine I cant even pronounce," and she spent the first part of the year trying to return too early and suffering setbacks. It wasnt until June that she could get through a round of golf and have enough energy left to practice. She didnt qualify for any of the events on the Asia swing, instead spending that time at home in Las Vegas retooling her swing with coach Butch Harmon. But she hit her stride on a warm day along the gulf shores of Florida. Even though the 5-iron was a shock -- she was trying to lay it up on the right side of the fairway, and the water is way on the left -- she quickly piled up birdies and finished with eight of them. "To be in the mix, and to be making birdies, is what you play for," Gulbis said. Five players had at least a share of the lead at one point, and Sunday figures to be a sprint to the finish. Gal made this dynamic leaderboard possible with a double bogey on the second hole, and the 28-year-old German never quite recovered. After making 14 birdies the opening two rounds, she made only one on Saturday. Lewis felt a sense of relief even as the leaderboard was tightening. Suzann Pettersen has to finish nine shots ahead of Lewis to win the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average. They started the day tied at par, and Lewis walked off the 18th green knowing she was virtually a lock to become the first American since Beth Daniel in 1994 to win the prestigious award. Lewis had a 63. Pettersen struggled to a 71, and now needs a 17-shot swing on Sunday to overtake Lewis. "Suzann was playing right behind me and I told myself I was not going to look back there all day long," Lewis said. "I wasnt going to look at a leaderboard and I was just going to take care of myself. And thats why I did." Now theres that matter of winning a tournament that gives Lewis another chance to end a long drought. She can take the money title with a win Sunday, which would make Lewis the first American since Betsy King in 1995 to win the Vare Trophy and the money title in the same year. The record day for Lewis started with a 5-iron from 177 yards that she holed for eagle on the third hole, though it still wasnt her best 5-iron of the year. She hit a pretty good one at St. Andrews on the 17th hole of the final round that carried her to victory in the Womens British Open. It was at the Old Course when Lewis realized the golf can take some quick and unexpected turns. She was two shots behind playing the 17th at St. Andrews and wound up winning. So even 11 shots behind going into Saturday, Lewis realized there was plenty of golf left. The final round is shaping up the same way, and it even includes Wie, who hasnt won since the Canadian Womens Open three years ago. It was at the CME Titleholders a year ago where she bent her torso parallel to the ground and turned that into her putting stroke. "Proud creator of the tabletop -- trademark, patent pending," she joked. "But it feels good. It feels good that I found something I created myself." And its working. Scottie Pippen Jersey . -- The Oakland Athletics and free agent right-hander Bartolo Colon have agreed to terms on a US$2 million, one-year contract, bolstering their depleted starting rotation. Michael Jordan Jersey . Warren made six birdies and a bogey for a 5-under total of 139 to sit one shot ahead of Felipe Aguilar of Chile, who carded a 69. David Horsey of England was also on 5 under through 15 holes to join Warren atop the leaderboard before play was stopped. http://www.officialbullsfanstore.com/. made a diving catch in left field for the final out in a 1-0 victory over the Miami Marlins in a regular-season finale Sunday. Zimmermann (14-5) allowed only two baserunners, finishing with 10 strikeouts and one walk in the fifth no-hitter in the majors this year. Bobby Portis Jersey . Berdych and Stepanek played all five matches when the Czechs beat Spain 3-2 in the final last November in Prague to win the countrys first title as an independent nation. Dennis Rodman Jersey . -- Wichita State is all alone in the record book.PRETORIA, South Africa - Oscar Pistorius must pay for what hes done and his apology to the family of the girlfriend he killed was not sincere, a cousin of Reeva Steenkamp said Thursday as testimonies wrapped up.Kim Martin spoke on the fourth day of the sentencing portion of the double-amputee Olympians trial. Following the testimony and final arguments, Judge Thokozile Masipa will rule on the punishment for Pistorius after convicting him of culpable homicide for shooting Steenkamp through a toilet door in his home.My lady, I really believe the accused, Mr. Pistorius, needs to pay for what hes done, Martin testified before the red-robed judge. My family are not seeking revenge, Martin said. We just feel to take somebodys life, to shoot somebody behind the door who is unarmed, who is harmless, needs sufficient punishment.Just after the court adjourned for lunch Thursday, Pistorius sister Aimee became tearful and distraught, telling her family that a man who was behind her in the gallery had mouthed an obscenity at her. Pistorius brother, Carl, said he would inform police about the courtroom incident. Two men who said they were in court to support Steenkamps family denied any involvement in the alleged incident and accused Aimee Pistorius and her family of lying.Theyre making up a fabricated story, same as Oscars, said Mikey Schultz, a former boxer and the self-confessed killer of a businessman in 2005 who escaped prosecution in an immunity deal with the state. Schultz has been seen sitting in court this week with men who have had confrontations with Pistorius in the past. The prosecution and defence said they would deliver final arguments on Friday, clearing the way for the judge to deliver the sentence at a date yet to be announced.Pistorius was acquitted of murder for the Feb. 14, 2013 killing and found guilty of the lesser crime of negligent killing. Masipa has wide latitude when deciding on a sentence for culpable homicide, and could order a suspended sentence and a fine, house arrest, or send him to prison for up to 15 years.Defence lawyers have argued for a sentence of three years of house arrest with community service. In the first part of the sentencing hearing, they called a psychologist and social workers, who said that Pistorius should not go tto prison because of his ongoing emotional suffering.dddddddddddd They also said his disability as a double amputee who needs prosthetic legs would leave him vulnerable in jail.Martin, the cousin, said a prison sentence would be appropriate for Pistorius and that she understood the rehabilitation program in jail to be humane and dignified, contrary to allegations by one of the social workers who testified for the defence. In her sometimes emotional testimony, Martin said many people had suffered because of Pistorius, including his own family, and that a sentence that excludes jail time would encourage the athlete to feel within himself that what hes done is all right.Zach Modise, the acting national commissioner for correctional services, testified after Martin, saying that the South African prison system compared favourably with prisons he had visited in Britain and the United States. He acknowledged problems such as overcrowding and gang activity, but said officials had made progress in combatting those problems and that some prison facilities can cater to disabled criminals, including Pistorius. We will be able to accomodate him, Modise said. The athlete would be housed in the hospital section of a Pretoria prison, he said. However, defence lawyer Barry Roux referred to reports of an increase in alleged torture in South Africas prison system. He also said an imprisoned gang leader alleged that Pistorius would be under threat if he is incarcerated; Modise said he was not aware of any threat.Chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel has described defence calls for a house arrest sentence as shockingly inappropriate and wants Pistorius to be sent to prison.Tension flared briefly during the court session when Roux suggested Nel was trying to place purported facts on the record rather than asking questions of a witness.I think Mr. Nel must just take the oath because hes giving evidence, Roux said, drawing laughter from the gallery.Nel responded that it wasnt funny.I could make the same sarcastic remark but I decided not to, he said.Judge Masipa later cautioned Roux, saying he could object but had not done so appropriately.Thursdays proceedings started on a light note. Nel congratulated Masipa on her 67th birthday and people in the courtroom applauded.
