Brooks has praised Westbrook while often publicly pointing out his three-time All-Stars need to find a balance between shooting and passing when he attacks. CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Reds Canadian first baseman Joey Votto is recovering from a strained muscle above his left knee and could soon begin a rehabilitation assignment in the minors. Votto, from Toronto, has been on the disabled list since May 21, trying to get rid of inflammation and to strengthen the muscle. He stayed in Cincinnati to get treatment on the leg while the team was on a seven-day trip. He was cleared to take batting practice with the team on Tuesday before the opener of a series against the San Francisco Giants. Rain washed out batting practice on the field, forcing players to hit indoors. Hes also going to take infield practice and run the bases the next few days. If he gets through that without a problem, he will start a rehab assignment. He and the team havent decided how many games hell need before hes ready to return. The Reds have gone 8-8 without him. "I feel really good, like I was before I got hurt earlier on in the season," Votto said. "So if I can get to good place, youre going to see a little bit more of the older version of me -- the younger version of me. Its one of these injuries that take a little bit of time." Votto is the 12th Reds player to go on the disabled list this season. The 2010 National League MVP is batting .257 with six homers and 12 RBIs in 39 games. The Reds are getting closer to having their lineup, rotation and bullpen back to full strength. Relievers Aroldis Chapman, Jonathan Broxton and Sean Marshall opened the season on the DL but have returned. Votto is the only regular position player still missing. In the first 15 minutes or so, himself and Jordan Henderson found it difficult under the high press from Scotland so the midfield three were outnumbering and making life a bit difficult, so you didnt really see too much of them in the opening exchanges. As the game went on, they got a measure of control which is what I think they are in the team to provide. They are there to do a solid job and enable the attacking players to get into the game. He was given a bit of a tough time at the start, Leigh Griffiths was closing defenders down and making it hard for Cahill and John Stones to play out from the back which is what they want to do, but he probably didnt have too much to do.John Stones - 6.5He was still trying to play his football during the game which he is capable of doing when playing out from the back but it was unusual the way Scotland approached it.They put him under a lot of pressure and a couple of times, he was over-playing so I was a little bit concerned in the opening 20 minutes for his performance, but the longer the game went on and Scotland sat off, we saw what type of player he is. Raheem Sterling - 9 Raheem Sterling was outstanding, says Hinchcliffe Sterling was outstanding. We know what a talented player he is with the ball, but his intelligence tonight was noticeable for the first goal. He came infield, it was his shot that got deflected for Walker to move into that space. Sterling and Adam Lallana have that intelligence to pop up in a variety of positions, and Sterling switched flanks tonight as well from right to left so again, he has that versatility which gives defences an awful lot of problems. His ability to run with the ball at pace is something England dont have in abundance so he is a key player going forward. Jordan Henderson - 7 Jordan Henderson played a solid game at Wembley, according to our pundit Again, hes there for that solid role, and its not necessarily nice to look at but its not meant to be. In terms of the formation of the team, his solid and disciplined performance allowed the attacking full-backs to go forward and Wayne Rooney to be released because they know they have the defensive insurance. Daniel Sturridge - 8When he was selected for the game, people were a little bit surprised, they thought Harry Kane might play and I was aa bit worried because hes the kind of player that likes to come towards the ball because when Scotland defend in numbers, Sturridge might find himself in midfield rather than playing as a striker.dddddddddddd But his awareness and ability to score goals is beyond question. The opening goal, which was the decisive factor in the game, only Sturridge could score a goal of that quality because the cross was really fizzed at him. Daniel Sturridge netted the opener for England on Friday evening Thats why Southgate probably looked at him, and he hasnt been playing regularly for Liverpool, but he has that ability in the blink of an eye to turn a cross into a goal.Wayne Rooney - 8This is more the type of position we want to see Rooney in. The Ottawa Redblacks are looking at the architect of the CFLs most aggressive defence as their first-ever head coach. Rickey Henderson Jersey . TSN has confirmed the Redblacks have settled upon Calgary Stampeders defensive co-ordinator Rick Campbell as their inaugural head coach. Ottawa is scheduled to return to the CFL in 2014. Campbell is a 15-year CFL coaching veteran but the Ottawa appointment would be his first as a head coach. Campbell is the third CFL head coach to be hired this off-season behind Edmontons Chris Jones and Winnipegs Mike OShea. All three are first-time CFL head coaches. Campbell is the son of legendary Edmonton Eskimos head coach and executive Hugh Campbell and has spent the last two years as Calgarys defensive co-ordinator. This past season, Calgary recorded a CFL-best 63 sacks en route to posting a league-best 14-4 record. But the Stampeders lost 35-13 to eventual Grey Cup-champion Saskatchewan in the West Division final. Campbell had been mentioned as a leading candidate for Edmontons head-coaching job, which went to Jones. Campbell succeeded Jones as Calgarys defensive co-ordinator in 2012 when Jones left to join the Toronto Argonauts. Also reportedly considered for the Ottawa job were former CFL head coaches Paul LaPolice, Greg Marshall, Doug Berry, Marcel Bellefeuille and Danny Maciocia. This past season, Calgary boasted two of the CFLs top pass rushers in Charleston Hughes (league-high 18 sacks) and Cordarro Law (third with 14). Hughes was both a West Division and CFL all-star in 2013. Hughes and Law also anchored a defence that forced a league-high 11 turnovers on downs and was second in fewest points allowed (22.9 per game). In its first year under Campbells guidance, Calgarys defence was second in sacks (43) and third in points allowed (23.9 per game). Campbell joined the Stampeders staff in 2010 as their running backs coach. That year Calgary boasted the leagues top ground attack with 2,618 rushing yards. In 2011, Campbell was Edmontons assistant head coach and special-teams co-ordinator. He has spent the bulk of his CFL coaching career -- 11 years in fact -- with Edmonton, having served as an assistant head coach, special-teams co-ordinator, secondary coach and defensive co-ordinator during that time. Campbell won Grey Cups with the Eskimos in 2003 and 05. Campbell also served as a special-teams co-ordinator and defensive backs coach with Winnipeg in 09. Prior to coming to the CFL, Campbell was secondary and special-teams coach at the University of Oregon as a graduate assistant from 96-98. Now with a head coach in tow, the Redblacks can look ahead to the CFL expansion draft Dec. 16. Ottawa will select 24 players (eight imports, 16 Canadians) over three rounds. The Indians were cruising again until Perez came in for what looked like mop-up duty in the ninth. But Alex Presley hit an RBI triple, Brian Dozier drove in another run with a groundout, Josmil Pinto hit a two-run homer and suddenly the Twins were within one. Smith entered and gave up an infield single and a walk before fanning Arcia on three pitches for his third save. Perez has walked a tightrope on and off the field this season, and most of the time hes been in the news its been negative. The most glaring this year was his arrest for a marijuana delivery to his house. Francona measured his words carefully after the game when asked about Perezs status as the closer, but he hinted at a change. "You know what? I think well always figure out a way to win. Thats kind of the way I always view it," Francona said. Smith, Shaw and Justin Masterton are other options for the ninth-inning role. The manager said Perez poked his head in the office and apologized for his performance. "Well see. He felt bad. He was actually very team-oriented. Thats what youre looking for," Francona said. "Hes having a tough time, and hes owning up to it, and he doesnt want to cost us wins." Francona added: "Were not a team made of one person. Well figure it out." Perez has a 7.52 ERA in August and September, with 30 hits and seven homers allowed in 20 1-3 innings. "Anytime your closer is struggling a little bit, its tough," McAllister said. "Hes a great pitcher. Hes been great for his whole career. You dont become All-Stars for no reason. He knows how to pitch, and hell be ready." McAllister had a shutout intact despite allowing runners on in every inning. After a walk and a single with one out in the fifth, Shaw was summoned and got Ryan Doumit on a double-play grounder. McAllister gave up six hits and two walks. This was the right-handers shortest start in September, and the 68 pitches were his second-lowest total of 24 starts this season. "You definitely want to have that chance to get the win out there and stay in the game as long as you can, but its September now," McAllister said. "We have a lot of guys in the bullpen, and every games an important one. So you cant question anything." Shaw is 5-0 in 13 appearances this month, and hasnt permitted a run in 15 1-3 innings. Francona said he wanted to leave McAllister in but couldnt. "I just thought it was time. If Id have been managing with my heart, I wouldve left him in," Francona said.
